American Baseball in trouble - lol

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp..._labor_selig_3
"baseball" is in debt 4 Billion.
Most of the world finds baseball fucking boring (myself included) but I thought Americans love the sport? Is football & basketball now the main interest?

Baseball is far from the most favored sport now....and they're not losing money, I saw some article in Forbes or something that showed a couple billion dollar profit at least.

NFL is great!

When playing baseball as a kid, I remember the person at bat would stay at the plate if they don't get a hit.
Within a few seconds the pitcher was ready again.

However the pros take too long.
Notice when the batter doesn't get a hit he does the following:

- walks 10 feet from the plate.
- spits twice.
- fiddles with his hat.
- tapes his shoes a few times.
- spits again & scratches his crotch.
- returns to the plate & adjusts his little batter glove.
- swings the bat over the plate 11 times.
Finally he is ready to get to business, when the pitcher turns around to scare a guy leading off & the batter goes through the insane ritual again.

Why do they do that shit?
Whenever I see/play baseball in real life, no one does that crap after each pitch.
It really wastes a ton of time.
Baseball can be fun, but I hate seeing the game delayed after each pitch.
Is there any reason a batter needs to move like that?

SNOW I do hate watching baseball, but I love playing it. I played it on my school team and outside clubs.
I was just wondering why the sport was in trouble when I thought it was very popular in the US.

It would be the same if hockey was going broke in Canada. I found it odd.
I'm wasn't trying to insult you.

Also, find me a few posts I go out of my way to bash America.
I'll admit I dislike BUSH but I that is all for my "america bashing". You got a problem or something SNOW?

I LOVE the way that this fuckin IDIOT signed up with the name "LoveAsianChicks" and thinks it is necessary to point it out at every single opportunity. SO what? I find Asian girls are highly attractive. I also like redheads. But I don't go signing up for shit with the name "AdoreAsianGirls" or "WannaFuckRedheads"......... some guys like fat girls Or Italian girls...... I don't see any "LoveItalianChicks" or "LoveFATgirls" usernames around here. Word around the campfire is you're an obsessive retard and obnoxious moron.

Bulldog - Your obsessive with spacedog - another dude, so don't complain if I'm obsessive about something.

Its really only on this board I'm talking a certain way, but I've had many business deals come through from this board.
I can tell you that many people with asian sites have noticed my posts and some good stuff has formed as a result.

Anyways if I did offend anyone with the Baseball remark I'm sorry. I thought it was very odd the sport was in trouble.
Am I on the GFY board?
This shouldn't turn serious, 95% of what anyone says is joking or simply fucking around.

there is a difference between most popular sport now and all american past time....the fact is baseball has been around a helluva a long time, as well as football, but I do think baseballs roots are dug into the fabric of this country a little deeper than most if not any other sport and as such should always be considered americas pastime or whatever the hell else they wanna call it, the fact is its may not be a great sport to watch on tv but if you have ever played it or somehow gotten involved in it then you will know just how exciting and/or entertaining a professional baseaball game can be...in fact kman and i got to test first hand tonite just how entertaining it can be, so many drunk and interesting people all yelling and talking shit....fuck, you can beat that with a stick...and the fact that all these big public type events have heightened security now really adds to the festivities....hehehehe anyhow im somewhat biased, im a red blooded american that loves baseball and has played it since he was 6, call me crazy but fuckit! its a kickass sport!

partly because they are nervous , partly because they wanna psyche the pitcher out - get him out of his routine, and partly cuz they just wanna get there head together and get ready to whack the shit out of the ball that is about to be hurled at them at over 90 mph.....

Hockey is going broke in Canada. That's why all the teams are moving to America and last I knew the Montreal Canadians were owned by an American company.

I can't stand watching baseball because it's so fucking boring AND another reason is because there's so many damn games in a season, you feel no importance for the game because there's still a huge pile of games left.

Actually, the only time that I'll actually watch any sports on tv is during the playoffs, other than that, I don't waste my time, EXCEPT for football

I think most people have a big misunderstanding about what it means to watch baseball and why it's called America's favorite pastime.

Going to a baseball game whether it is pony league, high school, college or professional is an event....a gathering.

You do not just go there to watch the sport, but to congregate with friends , family and fellow fans.

It's like the worlds largest backyard get together at every stadium.

Growing up as a kid I have fond memories of going to my older brother's games, or watching family friends play. I along with the other younger kids would hang out behind the backstop behind the bleachers waiting for a foul ball.

We'd chase it down and the winner would be able to turn it into the snackbar for a soda or snow cone.

And inevitably, a pick up game of baseball would start...and if we didn't have a ball a wadded up plastic dr pepper cup would work...if we didn't have a bat we'd swat it with our hands.

And best of all, baseball is a summer sport. Those long summer days full of so much promise, there would be at least 3 games every Friday night and almsot all the families would stay for every single one regardless whether or not they had a kid playing in it.

It was like 4th of july every day...everyone was happy and enjoyed each others company.

You'll find this same kind of environment at a professional baseball game.

In fact some stadiums (The Ballpark in Arlington is one) now have places for kids to play baseball while the game is going on down below.

I suggest if you don't understand what's so great about "watching" baseball, you grab a few friends, your wife/husband and kids and go to a game and create some lasting memories.

Wasn't Jordan making $30 million a year his last season with the Bulls? Lately the baseball contracts have really been rising, true, but it still seems like basketball players make more overall.

To me it seems like the NBA is dying, losing a large group of the older crowd due to the cocky young stars. Sure the cockyness of the players attracts a younger group of people, but they don't spend the money either.

Anyway, I love going to baseball games. I can't go into Chicago without going to a Cubs game. There's nothing like a Pepsi, hot dogs, and peanuts at Wrigley. I saw them play the Padres here in San Diego a few weeks back. I think it was the first time I've ever actually seen them win, and I've been to numerous games.

Yeah that was after he left the game and came back. Until then He made 2-3 million a year. He was and still pissed off about it. He hates Chicago because of that.

baseball is def stilll a great sport, but I can see a bunch of teams losing money - there are some real shitty teams out there with horrible attendance.

expos, devil rays, brewers, etc.

baseball is also hurt by the salary cap -- its no surprise the yanks win every year, they can buy any player they want, hence jason giambi..

the smaller clubs like the ones mentioned just dont have that type of cash. they really cant compete for the world series and thats when they find attendance lagging.

uh dude,Newsweek just did a poll...the job making the most money on average,#1 NBA-4.5 million a year ... I can name hmm 25 NBA stars who have 5 year contracts of more than 80million ... there isn't too many baseball players that have a contract that high...and the highest paid football player doesnt even have a contract over 80million(correct me if I'm wrong)...shit my friend plays division I college basketball and probably makes more than a MLB minimum wage player

Yes you can play basketball by yourself,do you have a court and a ball? YOU CAN PLAY BY YOURSELF

I love to watch football, baseball, basketball, and hockey...I love to play golf (played on the HS golf team)
And I understand some people have their favorites when it comes to a particular sport, and some don't understand why others just don't get theirs.

But to sit here and say one is better than the other etc, has to be the most ignorant form of fandom.

You can quote salary statistics, attendance records etc all day long to TRY and prove your point that one is better than the other...but you will be sorely lacking.

My posts have not been about how baseball is better than other sports, but to explain what it is so special about watching a baseball game for those who don't understand.

Sure basketball is fun to watch on t.v. vs baseball. Because of the fast pace...and the same goes for football and hockey.

But when it comes to work I'd rather have a baseball game on in the background, it just makes my day more productive because I don't have to watch every second of the game.

But once again nothing beats going to a baseball game and watching in person...live without the t.v.

Only football with their tailgate parties comes close.

You just don't have the same kind of camaraderie going on at a basketball game as you do at baseball and football games.

But for baseball there has been and always will be something mystical and magical about going to a game.

Look at how many books and movies have been made about this sport, and in most there is a common theme in them.
And once again that is the almost spiritual aspect baseball takes on for some.

Most ballparks have character to them, most are beautiful works of architecture.

Not much can be said about most other sporting arenas.

Now even basketball is attempting to capture some of this magic...take a look at the Indiana Pacers Conseco Field House.

It was designed to look like an old Indiana High School Field House to capture that Indiana HS Basketball magic...which I think is great for basketball.

As for me...give me the Ballpark In Arlington any ol' day

eros, all well and good, but apparently the majority of the country doesnt feel the same way you do or you would see more people in the stands, higher contracts for baseball players and endorsment deals...I watch sportscenter and the only teams that have the stands half way full are the Yankees and Braves....
I love baseball,I could have went to college on a 3/4 scholarship but you have to admit it's just plain boring to watch, even live in person

aluminum bats = good...yes?

Wrigley is almost always full. Now don't go telling me that the Cubs are a penant contender.

I'm with eros on this one. I don't like Pepsi at all, but every time I go to a game I must have a Pepsi. The hot dogs taste Godly. The air is crisp. The atmosphere is just magical, plain and simple.

Another reason people love baseball is because they can relate to it so well. You guys should know something about this, it's how we can sell "the girl next door" so well.

Not many people can relate to demanding sports such as football and basketball.

baseball is more like a game of chess..watching the coaches change their strategies with most every pitch and or play....the reason the batter steps out of the box is to ensure they are comfortable and ready to go...it's also a psyche out...just like some pitchers will toss a ball up and in on someone or a baserunner will take out a shortstop...these little mind games...

it's a much more deliberate game....takes more time...it's for longer attention spans....I love the strategies and different little nuances of the game...watching a guy like Greg Maddux who can slice up the plate like a surgeon, yet he's not a big guy and by looking at him, you couldn't tell he was one of the best pitchers of all time...then you have a guy like Randy Johnson who can knock your head off with one pitch and intimidate you into committing to bad pitches...two different types of pitchers but very successful.....

I personally find basketball very boring and think it would be improved by giving players sticks to guard the hoop...

football is ok, but I just like the brutality of hockey better and don't get me started on soccer/football...that games needs landmines and weapons to turn me into even the slightest of fans.......

Baseball will be hurt...and some teams who are not pulling their weight anyway will probably have to bail out and shut down..however for baseball being "gone for good."

LOL no way man...it will never happen.

Dude...if baseball goes on strike in August its GONE...nobody will care anymore...Go search for professional opinions, the strike is a 50% chance but if it does happen there is a 90% chance it wont be around,at least for a few years...Personally,I would hate to see that happen but it is a VERY strong possiblity...
