switching gears a little....sort of a serious topic
my mom is in her late 40's and just now she is taking up smoking cigaretts! She started about 1 year ago, smoking like twice a week...and now she is smoking like twice a day...and Im afraid she is going to soon become addicted and be a full time smoker(if she is not already)

what can I do to get her to stop before it is too late? When I tell her it is bad to smoke and she should stop, she tells me "when you stop drinking and smoking pot, ill stop smoking"

I smoke pot like once a month, and drink just on weekends....I tell her its normal for people to drink occaisonally, and smoking pot will not kill you, but ciggaretts will. She just doesnt buy the argument. Any ideas at all? Would appreciate serious answers, just this one time. thanx

Buy her a couple cartons of CANADIAN CIGARETTES ...

Our warning labels (50% of the available real estate on a pack ... and that is the LAW) would surely scare the fuck out of her, if not gross her right out ... she'd be sure to quit ...

Yes smoking is bad, but the gal is 40 years old. She's probably gone though life doing the things she was supposed to do... living up to other people's expectations, yada yada, so now she just wants to do what SHE wants to do. Give the mom a break.
Pot may not be as dangerous as cigarettes, but your still sucking smoke and other bad goobies into your lungs which cannot be healthy.

and she is right. You can't sit there with a drink in one hand and a joint in the other and tell her she shouldn't smoke.

I don't like cigarettes; they are nasty things BUT...........

Your Mom is an adult and she probably doesn't appreciate her son (who she sees as a dope smoking good for nuthin') bawling her out about it. You know and I know that a little dope and a little booze now and then doesn't hurt anyone. She should realise this too but she seems to have chosen the more socially acceptable addiction. Try to be gentle about the nagging and figure out WHY she has started smoking instead of just moaning at her every time you see her light up.

Hmm, you sound like an uneducated T-totaller.

No offense, but drinking occasionally does NOT harm you. Up to 7 units a week (preferably not all at once on Friday night but instead a drink a day on average) is actually GOOD for your circulatory system. It helps dialate your arteries and veins just a little bit to help prevent clogging and heart disease.

As for pot: No, smoke in your lungs isn't good for you but its MUCH better than a cigarette. If you sit down and roll a pure grass joint, with no additives, it is far safer on your lungs than the added tar and nicotine and other traces of crap (like fiberglass!!!) they put in the average Marlborough.

You know, reading your replies on this board I have no doubt that your mom smoked a shitload of something for at least nine month a few years back.

I'm guessing smoking a few fags now and then is far less harmful that giving hand jobs at the bus station for crack rock, so you should be happy she's retired.

In Canada each box of smokes has some picture, but only 2-3 are gross and about 10 are not in the least bit gross.

That will do no good... Will most likely make it worse If she were drinking alot you wouldn't want to nag her about that.
Nagging will just increase the use...

I smoke..... and it's a fucking dirty, nasty habit... But you can't nag people, does ZERO, ZIP good... you might ever so often say hey Mom, how you going to take care of me if your Planted and am here still kicking or something to that effect..... but not every time she lights up..... do it when she's not smoking... And from what I've seen of your post on this board..... Don't Do It Every 5 Min.'s.

Booze cost the tax payers of this country a hell of alot more money than people that smoke cigs.... and am not going to get into a pissing match about Booze, Pot, and Cigs..

Could be a midlife crisis. Ask her if she's happy and such. If not, find out why and try finding something to make her happy. If she is happy, go study your Marketing book to learn the key steps in persuading someone... but then again, we all know your book is full of complete shit.
