WinXP pro worth upgrading?

Should I upgrade from win98 SE to XPpro?
Looks kind of like a girlie OS but im sure you could prolly alter the theme/templates.
Is it worth it?

I don't know about upgrading, but the most recent machine we bought had XP installed from the shop and it seems far more stable than 98 or ME.

I don't think the operating system has crashed in months.

However, it's been a bitch to get the XP machine to work on the network with the 98/ME/2000 machines. Everything works together ok, except sometimes some of the machines can't see the XP machine, even though it can always see them. I have no idea why.

Overall, I give it the thumbs up.

Works for me I went from 98 to 2k then eventually 2k became unstable so rather than reformat I upgraded to XP pro. Been fine since and rarely if ever crashes. I turned the cartoon look and fading up/down off though. Both annoyed too much.

The look's no big deal....I went from 98SE to XP Home and hated the design too, all you have to deal is click this little thing that says 'Classic look' or something.

I'm pretty happy with the OS overall, much much more stable than 98SE was.

HELL YEAH !!!

I fought off upgrading to it for over a year ... I'd heard so many mixed opinions, and 2000 Pro was mighty stable ...

But when I was faced with building a new box from the ground up ... my roomate convinced me that XP Pro was the way to go ...
It's been just over 2 months now, and I am sold

In all honesty ... I think 2000 Pro is just a touch more stable ...
But for all the new features available in XP ... I am willing to make the sacrifice ...

I used to reboot maybe once every 7 or 8 weeks with 2000 Pro, now with XP Pro, I find myself rebooting weekly, but I have also been told that if I slap another 256 MBs in the ol' box, bringing it up to 512, it would be pretty much as stable as 2000 Pro

The price of RAM is supposed to bottom out next week ... so you KNOW what I'll be doing ...

I like 2000 more, but the computer I use only has 128MB of ram. I use WinXP pro now, but it's a bit slow at times.

Thankfully, when I build my new pc, it will have more than 128MB of ram (Muskin High Performance DDR2100 512MB ECC registered ram to be exact )

WinXP and 2k usually default to being "hidden" on the network.. There's some switch you can flip on the command line to make them come out and play, but damn if I can remember what it is.

Cheers,
Backov

I had the same problem when I was sharing an building with a friend..... with 2k pro and win 98... but we found our problem was
Norton personal firewall... and our router.... I did the trouble shooting and had one huge of a time convinceing him that our one month router was bad... as to the firewall we switched to ZoneAlarm..... but even without the router and firewall getting the 2k pro and win98 to work was bitch...... could see the computers one way but not the other......
So one of mine was a 2k pro and a win98.... if I wanted to back up I up my main computer I had to go to the 2k pro one and do it from there...
