Do people in USA care about the world cup?

I heard football (or what you call soccer in USA) has become more popular in the last 10 years in North-America.

But do the average north-american care about the 2006 Germany FIFA World Cup? It will be interesting to know.

I also know soccer is currently very popular between women in USA. I think more popular than Men's soccer.

I remmeber in the 1994 USA World Cup, some journalists from south america asked people in streets of L.A. if they knew that the world cup was currently being played there, and these people don't even knew what soccer was.

Here in Latin America and in most European countries, it is the most popular sport

It would be very inteersting to know which position has soccer, in your "most popular sports ranking" in USA.

Maybe something like this?

1) NFL
2) Beisbol
3) Basketball
4) NHL
5) Golf
6) Soccer ???

USA has their own professional soccer league now, which is a huge step. Toronto just got a franchise as well, last week. They play friendlies with Mexican professional teams semi-regularly now, and I believe are ranked 12th in the world behind Mexico.

Some care, some don't.

I would be interested to know this as well. Where I come from Soccer is very very popular and it's usually an ice breaker when you meet someone for the first time.. In fact I would say it's more popular than religion..

Of course americans care about it otherwise the populatiry wouldn't be going up as it does. They americans got a good team so watch out for them in the upcoming tournament. They will do well. So will England and Brazil (as always).

Denmark is not in the tournament this time. Sadly!

To answer the question, the average person in the U.S. is not interested in the World Cup.

Yes, unfortunately, Brazil is always favourite, and it is becoming a little boring in the last tourneys, because they alwasy reach finals, and sometimes they have help from the Referees, which sucks.

Man's let's put this straight.

the FIFA Coca-Cola ranking doesn't show the real position. All people make the mistake to see that ranking and value soccer teams according to it.

The best teams are those who are "Heads" of each group. And to make this more accurate ranking they see how many participations, or how many finals each team reached, or how many world cups each team won.

For example, the best countries according to all theese parameters are: Brasil, Italy, Germany, Argentina, England and France.

And some of them are not even in the first 10 places according to that weird COCA COLA ranking, which is only based in dumb points, which are tricky.

10 years ago, before COCA COLA sponsored the FIFA ranking, it was based in all those parameters i told you, and it was almost impossible for teams like USA or Checz Republic to reach the 10 places. Unless they won a World cup.

COCA COLA wanted to put weak teams like USA in the first places. Marketing tricks. However nowadays USA soccer has grow a lot. And probably it won't be considered weak in some time.

Didn't the women's soccer league in the US fold?

Its just got to much competition. Superbowl Sunday is actually the most watched sporting event in the world, not any soccer match.

I remember years back they tried to shove soccer down our throats by putting this bad ass US goalie on every commercial. "Miola" or something like that. That worked until everyone found out he was only 5'4". I remember asking that the US couldn't come up with a taller goalie than that.

Some of us do... I think there'll be a surprise in Germany this year. Dunno if the USA will win, but I suspect they'll be playing on the final weekend (probably in the 3rd Place game... they might even win that.)

What it is going to come down to in Group E for the USA is who can get a win against someone other than Ghana. I have a hunch that perhaps Italy, Czech Republic and the USA may all end up with 5 points, drawing the other top teams, and beating Ghana...then it comes down to goal differnential. If it comes to scoring goals in this sport, I don't think there are too many active players I want ahead of Landon Donovan.

However, the draw the USA is in means at least one of the top 10 teams in the tourney doesn't make it to the knockout phase.

My top 5 in the tourney:

1) Brazil
2) Czech Republic
3) USA
4) Netherlands
5) Germany

We are in the top ten? LoL I would have never known.. So maybe that answers his question..

I don't know anyone that watches soccer or euro football.. I did have a friend that was from India that I went to school with from the time I was in 1st grade up until about 7th or 8th. He had a younger brother and they both played soccer all the time it's all they ever talked about. His younger brother ended up playing in one of the world cups or something like that on the US team. That or he played on a european team and played in europe.. I dunno which but I know he was in the world cup.

BTW, to all sponsors: some special content about world cup would be good, people in USA don't give a shit to soccer but remember that that's "The sport" of the rest of the world.

South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, they all go crazy about soccer, so some girls with shirts with colors of country flags, something like that, I donno, I'm not expertise in content, but I think you get the idea.

I can not recall in my entire life ever meeting someone who had the slightest intrest in soccer.

however, the new england revolution are well known here, but thats only because they play on the same field as the new england patriots and fucking destroy it, so they are pretty much hated, even though no one can even name one of the players tearing up the grass.

95 out of 100 sports fans in the US couldn't tell you when or where the world cup is being held.

If you really want to list the US sports by popularity, meaning people watching or attending, it would go something like this:

College Football
NFL Football
High School Football
Nascar

Soccer is a good sport in the US for small kids to learn. Its not very complicated and its really safe, so small kids can play until they get older. If they still are athletic when they get older, they can advance to a more complicated sport.

If they master soccer and want to make a living at it, they practice, practice and practice until the big kids at school ask them to try out as the placekicker on the football team.

Some of the best soccer players in the world probably kick field goals in football stadiums instead of riding on a bus for 10 years making zero money.

Here in the US national team events are not very popular. Few want to see a group of Americans in any sport go up against another country.

The only real exceptions being Olympic sports such as swimming and running since they get very little coverage outside of the Olympics every four years.

We are more about following local teams playing against other American teams. The rest of the sporting world just doesn't matter.

Kind of sad, nothing like a international football game or World Cup to unite a nation. Many countries around the world comes to a complete stand still when their national team plays a rival in football. Brazil vs Argentina, England vs Germany a couple of good examples.
