Vinton Council Votes Against Adult Entertainment

VINTON - Karilea Ries loves helping her customers find that perfect outfit. She doesn't want to see a business open up nearby that relies around women removing their clothes.

"Vinton is thought of as a respectful community and I would hate to see something of that morale value show up here in town," Ries said.

Adult entertainment is a hot topic ever since a strip club opened up right outside neighboring Urbana. That's why the Vinton City Council is poised to pass a law in anticipation of a license request.

Mayor John Watson proposed the ordinance. He said it had a clear purpose: "To make everyone in our community aware that we are a family oriented community and that adult entertainment has its place and we just don't feel it's inside our city limits."

The ordinance says "No adult-use business shall be located within 2,000 feet of a park, school, day care center, library or religious or cultural activity."

This will virtually ban all adult entertainment establishments from getting a business license. "The restrictions would make it extremely hard to have one-yes," said Watson.

The ordinance hasn't met any resistance so far. The vote Thursday night was unanimous to pass the law. The council has to vote two more times before the law is on the books.
