I never trusted WD drives either but I have one of their 10k RPM raptor drives and it's never given me any issues. Also came with a 5 year warranty.

I dunno about their standard drives but the Raptors kick ass IMO.

I've also had good luck with IBM and Maxor drives.

For me, Seagate is a winner 'cause it's the only one that still has a 5 year warranty. AND they've been pretty reliable.

I've had a ton of Western Digital drives die, and a few Maxtors. I think that Western Digitals are reliable only if you keep them cool (i.e., good ventilation, and don't run them in portable drive enclosures.)

In IDE, Seagate and Maxtor absoultely suck. I use Western Digital exclusively on IDE. For SATA, I havent found a favorite yet. SCSI is the only place I will trust Seagate.

But Maxtor can suck a cock. EVERY drive I have ever had from them has failed within two years of purchase. And thats about 20 drives since 1999.

I change IDE hard drives once every two years whether they need it or not. I consider it a cost of being online, my data is far too important to try and be cheap streching another year out of a drive.

Hey Juicy, among other things i still have a computer business in Australia and can tell you whats reliable in terms of low RA and DOA.

Fujitsu, Hitachi drives seem to be ok in the laptop sector

for PC, Seagate are the ones we have lower returns and dead on arrivals with
and they are backed with a 5 year warranty. In australia I find the Maxtor drives simply attrocious and refuse to stock them. WD are ok but more returns on faulty items than Seagate. I have 12 harddrives running in the PCs in my hom,e office and i think 11 are seagate.

Maxtors suck. They fail a lot. Seagates don't and have a 5 year warranty to back it up.

We've relied on western digitals for the last few years. Maxtors have failed on us in the past.
