Larry Flynt against .XXX! (letter from Hustler in here)

posted on ICANN by Tom Hymes:
http://forum.icann.org/lists/xxx-tld.../msg00412.html

(The following letter is posted with the permission of Larry Flynt. The
link is to a .jpg of the letter. - Tom Hymes)

http://www.freespeechonline.org/webd...rXXXLetter.jpg

April 2006

Dear ICANN Representatives,

Speaking on behalf of my company, Flynt Management Group, LLC I would
like to state my opposition to the creation of a dot xxx top level
domain (TLD), which I believe represents a direct threat to freedom of
speech on the Internet. Legislation was recently introduced in the U.S.
senate that will create a mandatory .xxx TLD, and in Australia a law has
been proposed that would institute ISP-level filtering of adult content.
Even if these individual initiatives fail, they have convinced me that
is it inevitable that government will continue to try to impose a
regulatory scheme on dot xxx that is unnecessary and unconstitutional.

Flynt Management Group, LLC has been a leader in the adult entertainment
industry for 32 years. As a producer of high quality adult products made
by adults for adults, my company has helped make this industry the
legitimate business it is today. I am dedicated to supporting a
responsible working environment that conforms to the laws of the land,
and actively support efforts to make the Internet safe for children,
paticularly through education, good business practices, and by
advocating the use of filtering technologies, which have become
increasingly effective and easy to use.

But dot xxx is an inherently dangerous idea with no real purpose. Only
if it becomes a tool of censorship will it achieve its goal of
preventing access to adult content by minors, and if it falls short of
that goal, what reason for it was there for it in the first place,
especially if alternative methods and tools can achieve the same
results. This industry is open to all solutions to making the Internet
a safer and freer place, but dot xxx is not one of them.

Because of these concerns and others, I respectfully request that ICANN
reject the current ICM Registry application.

Sincerely,

Larry Flynt
President

Maybe we do have some industry leaders after all: a few "names" have stood up today. The rest... they should be ashamed of themselves.

All i can say is "WOW" what a powerful letter !

So, if someone who has lead our industry for 32 years and primarily formed it to what it is today thinks that the DOT XXX is a bad idea - does that not tell all you people who are "pro dot xxx " that maybe it's time to rethink your decision?!

Except we are not sticking together. How many webmasters with plenty of time to whore their sigs still haven't taken a couple of minutes to email ICANN? And don't forget ICM had plenty of help with their application, even if those willing to f*ck us all over are keeping a low profile now.

Title: Leaders in the Online Adult Industry Support .xxx

I write this to communicate my support for the .xxx TLD proposal. I write as an experienced member of the online Adult Industry and have been since 1995.

I currently own an Internet marketing company specializing in adult website marketing since 2001. Prior to that I was President of IGallery, as subsidiary of New Frontier media, a NASDAQ listed company from 1996 to 2001 and prior to that was VP of Marketing for Hustler launching its flagship site in 1995.

I am also a director of the Free Speech Coalition since 2001.

All these companies share one belief ... that child pornography is illegal, it is morally wrong and it should be stopped. This application demonstrates that belief and that the adult industry is prepared to both do something about child pornography and open up a dialogue with the broader Internet community.

.xxx offers an opportunity for the online adult industry act responsibly.

It provides a new forum and platform for the online adult industry to begin to self-organize and to develop their own credible and responsible business practices.

I have personally met with many of the leaders in the online adult community from around the world ... from Python Communications in Curacao ... to Netcollex in the UK ... to Hustler, Vivid, AVN and many many more have all demonstrated their support for this application.

In addition, there is great concern about the risks posed to the industry if .xxx was to ever become a generic TLD.

No other application has stronger industry support or as broad and diverse a community of International supporters from all impacted stakeholders.

Greg Dumas
Will someone who knows his email PLEASE ask Greg to quickly email ICANN rescinding his letter?

Please, Greg???

Greg Dumas hasn't been on the Board of the FSC for a long time... been quite a few years.

Thank you Larry Flynt, I'm VERY pleased you did the right thing here!

LOL

True. Although I find that email rather disturbing for many reasons. With many wondering why ICANN has the idea that the adult net fully supports .XXX, his letter gives some insight.

It seems Greg is/was not only on the board of directors for the FSC, but on the board at the IMC Registry as well. At the same time! Not trying to burn anyone at the stake here, but doesn't that seem like a conflict of interest to you?

Gosh, maybe Brandon or someone should consider making you insight opinions known to ICANN? Can YOU also post an email about that to [email protected]?

I hope some of ya feel guilty about accusing the "Big Guys" in the back room making deals...

So I suppose Hustler is Vindicated as one of those that are not in the back room making deals.

All good news.

now if playboy.com sent something similar it would be hard to say with two household porn names against it that .xxx has the support of the industry

I believe at the time that Greg Dumas wrote he was an FSC director, that he wasn't.

Date of his ICANN posting: 14 May 2004

Quote from the July 16, 2004 Free Speaker (http://www.freespeechcoalition.com/n...ter7-16-04.htm)

"FSC WEBSITE HAS A NEW LOOK!
It took longer that we expected and is still under construction, but our new FSC website is UP! Thanks so much to board member Sid Grief of AAANews.com, former board member Greg Dumas and the folks at AVN Online for the important part each played in updating our site. "

Greg has done alot for the biz and very supportive of the FSC, though it is understandable that his post on ICANN in support for .XXX and making it seem like the adult biz supports .XXX, casts a big shadow over him.

Where did you see that Dumas was on the board of directors at ICM?

I've never heard that before.
