just because the plugin is 96%, it's still not the industry standard bhuto..... you know this is true. You can't really compare a Flash site to a flat site.... they're 2 different animals.

I still personally vote flat only as well for the show.... why? because it keeps things level. Sure, I know... you can do some amazing shit with Flash. But you can also do some amazing shit with alot of other stuff too.... php, asp, coldfusion, shockwave, etc... this shouldn't be about what kind of tricky shit you can do with exotic programs. It's not a job interview.

It should be what you can do within the given guidelines and scope of the event.

I'm tempted to think that Flash would be okay if it was limited to graphical use only.... no audio, no programming, no tricks. But then there will be crying about that too....

either way, this Flash thing needs to be voted on and resolved here soon.... and I think the participating designers should be the ones to vote and decide.... either that or the officials need to get together and make a decision one way or the other on it.

But the 2 category thing isn't gonna work with only one set of prizes... so the Flash needs to either be lumped into the one big show, or given the thumbs down. Unless of course, the prize people wanna specify for "Best Flat Tour" or Best Flash Tour"..... and do the split vote thing, but that just seems like alot of unnecessary complication to me....

:) im serious. i take the average size for a html splash page (around 110k-120k) and never go over it.. last flash splash i did was 70k.. i remember a thread where someone was talking about how impossible it was to get a nice design under 70k.. vectors.. mate.. vectors..... flash streams better.. the flash parts of html/fpas i do load first.

no doubt.... I've made some smokin' Flash stuff that had extremely small file sizes...

as i said.. take it out i don't mind.. as long as i can display it with everyone elses work. grey out the vote button.

Can someone out there donate some quality ebony content for the contest. Have a bunch, but it's crap quality, and don't think it would look so good.

i guess i see it as showing people what we're capable of.. i know im starting to sound whiney on the issue.. so as i've said.. take it out of prize contention.. someone said this is about "putting up or shutting up" i think that was imtimated earlier.. and since im always defending flash.. why not let me create one you guys can rubbish and say is too big, takes too long etc, etc??? :)

I'd say he is showing what any artist is really about, and thats showing off his skills and his work. If he cant win prizes, doesn't matter to him, he still only wants his work to be seen, I say that in itself brings us back to what this Showdown was about, Talent.

And being an artist whether you design in Flash, Gameboy Pixelation, or Dreamweaver, fuck it, grab some pics and let the slicing begin.

:winkwink: right on..... let's carve this in stone then:

1. Must confirm participation by being listed on the official page (being created now) by noon May 31st. No late entries. (this page will be moving when the "Showdown" site goes live.)

2. No databasing, weird plugins, or hotlinking.

3. Tours must be uploaded and online by the start of the voting which will begin at 1pm (Pacific time). If your tour is not online by the deadline, you are disqualified. (no-brainer there)

4. Must be an adult tour. (cuz if we allowed mainstream and other shit, that's just an ugly place we don't even wanna go to)

5. Must be designed by the person named on the contestant list. (No buying or contracting a tour and putting it up.... anyone can do that)

6. Must be a NEW design... no previously made tours. There's really no way to verify this other than checking the image & file timestamps.

7. Entries must be flat tours only. No Flash, Shockwave, etc. allowed for competition. Showcasing for alternative sites outside the contest guidelines will be available.

8. Tours may not be blatantly designer identifiable until AFTER the competition. What this means is, the voting is going to be anonymous. You can't put your name on the thing or something so that people will instantly recognize who did it. If your particular style is picked up on, that's acceptable (and really unavoidable anyway), but don't "mark" your tour by putting your company url on it or something.
FEMALES: Because of the anonymity factor, do not build a tour using yourself as the model if you are obviously recognizable. We all know how many votes you could draw by doing so. ;-)

9. You may only enter one tour per designer for the competition. You may, however, enter as many as you like for the non-competitive showcase.

okay... we're almost starting to resemble order more than chaos.... but a couple things:

1. we still need to decide if we're gonna hafta choose between 5 or 6 domains for everyone (to narrow the scope) or if we free-for-all it and choose your own domain and whatever niche you want. I personally vote for the free-for-all..... makes it more interesting. :winkwink:

2. The voting starts at 1pm Pacific June 7th, 2002.... but we also need a stop time.

3. There's an assload of sweet prizes (thank you all for the incredible prizes!) and a winner-takes-all isn't looking real cool anymore because of that. I think 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places would be better. Which means, we need to split the prize list into what is awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd places..... Obviously, unless someone intends to out do Lensman, the HDTV is the Grand Prize here.... but the rest of the list is a little more difficult to split.... anyone want that job?

that's all I can think of at the moment.....

9. You choose your own domain, niche, & content. Domain can be one you own, or make-believe. The tours won't be on their domains for the competition anyway, so the names are only for design and niche purposes. Content may be some that you already own, want to buy, plan to shoot, or is sponsored by a provider. (just don't steal the stuff.... ;-)
