Is this a good deal on a new machine?

AMD Duron 1200
256 megs ram
20 gig hd
56x cd rom
speakers
no os, monitor, keyboard, just the box
1 year warranty

$485

Is that good or can I do better?

I'm currently running an 400 mhz amd k2 with an 8 gig hd, so this new machine would be 4 times faster and have over double the hd space.

videocard - Nvidia Riva TnT2' AGP w/ 32mb
motherboard - ECS Socket A - 462
no idea what they mean but maybe you guys know oif those are decent or shit

it is better to have a great video card and an average proccesor then to have a great processor and a average video card. i read this on toms hardware, and i think he is 100% right

riva tnt2 is a decent card, but you can do much much better than that. Geforce 2 is real cheap right now, with geforce 4 out....i'de recomend maybe getting at least a geforce 2 and instead, going with a 1000 MHZ processor to compensate for the price difference

What does the video card have to do with the processor?
I seriously don't know.

for about 200 dollars more you can get one of the New AMD 1.8 XP procs. A nice mother board, DDR RAM , a nice sound and video card.
You didn't mention anything about it having a NIC either.

Just my opinion

video card is responsible for displaying rich colors, textures, 3d graphics on your comp...the better the video card, the better your overall graphics, specially for playing games and working with 3d software and such. it also helps with the frame rate while playing games and viewing videos, ETC.

Marcus,

I just upgraded from a 500 cpu to a 1.47 with 80 gig hard drive and 512 meg of ram with dvd player and cd burner 16x for $800. Compaq 5420 at Circuit City. It might be worth it to cough up the extra bucks - I don't know much about the video cards but this computer does everything fast!
I went with a Compaq (etc) because of experience with no-name or E- machine types.

That sounds like a good deal to me as long as you make sure you have a good graphics card. I can run Max Payne on a pentium 3 450 with a semi decent graphics card so i expect that machine to well outperform mine.
