I use the WD1500ADFD for my system drive and two WD4000KD for storage and have never had any issues.

I am a big fan of the new WD hard drives.

External? What's the point. By the way, Best Buy has a l33t Seagate 400GB (EIDE 7200RPM 16MB cache harddrive) for $159 on sale right NOW! (Normally $229) I picked one up yesterday.

Whatever external drive enclosure you get, try and find one that actually has an internal fan in it. There are only a few that do, but they run MUCH cooler than the ones with no fan, and excess heat is one of the biggest cause of premature drive failures.

As far as reliability, I've never had a Samsung drive fail, and I've had 3 or 4 of those, but I have had a crapload of Western Digitals and slightly less number of Maxtors fail within the past 18 months. I don't necessarily think one is more reliable than another, but if I have a choice of brands for a similar price, I go with Seagate, 'cause they are the only drives that come standard with a 5 year warranty, which I think says a lot about their willingness to stand behind their drives.

BTW Fry's / Outpost.com will give you a good deal on drives and sell you an extended warranty on a non-Seagate drive for I think $15 for 3-4 years.
