From what I've heard, the Japanese flick Audition is about the most gruesome ever ... and it starts off so innocently, apparently:

When the film was screened at the Rotterdam Film Festival 2000 it had a record number of walkouts. At the Swiss premiere someone passed out and needed emergency room attention.

the movie had a good concept but the fact they were going to look for pussy was stupid, and to be honest I would prefer to see the illusion of carnage, the mind plays far worse tricks on you than actually seeing it.....

I thought it was great, something different. Having done the backpacking thing thru' Europe it brought back some good memories of different hostels I stayed in.

It should be required viewing for every parent before they let their kids travel around Europe, as a worst case scenario.

I haven't seen Hostel, but I have seen Audition. It's a bit of a sleeper - very slow to start, and feels much like the other Japanese films of that time (Ringu, Ju-On, etc) in regards to film quality, audio, etc. It's all about atmosphere.

And of course I had to master her giggle at the end.

(P.S. Yes, the end is bloody and gruesome, but not much more so than Misery. The intensity is in the atmosphere.)

He should go back to webmastering. I didn't think the movie was very well done on a number of levels.

It was a waste of time. The movie totally blowed. I suggest if you like movies like this rent Battle Royale, Ichi the Killer & Suicide Club. Just a few great Jap flicks mentionable. Of course they are subtitled though.
