Snapnames.com - how honest?
How honest do you think they are?
We just scored a couple of premium domains. We noticed with one of them the one that should have been least popular - there was someone that starting to bid against us and pushed up the bidding to over $2K - while the one that should have been most popular went to $300 then the other guy dropped out. The question is this: Is there any verification on who the other betters could be? If snapnames wanted to play games - since the other bidders are secret - they could start pushing up bets just to put extra revenue in their pockets. Same thing that happens with many bets within ebay - I guess its hard to control but I dont think that ebay is bidding things up - not as much reward for them todo verses the cost if they where caught. What do you guys think? Am I off base? |

I have picked up a few there but there is no way to really know how honest they are.

No, you are not off base. I just won a domain from them. The domain was a obviously nice mainstream one. The "bidder" that started bidding against me was obviously fake. I thought I had time to finish bidding and I went out of town, forgot the bidding was ending and I lost... for just $61
Now, I don't know about you, but if I win a bid that costs $1 more than it cost me to backorder the domain I wouldn't let it go. But somehow, the bidder did just that. I was awarded the domain after all. That leads me to believe the computer is setup to automatically start bidding to up the price. I can't say this isn't a smart tactic on their part. It's not illegal as far as I know. It is shady though. At the end of the day I truly believe you can't trust anyone in the domain acquisition process 100%.

I agree its not illegal - but I don't see anyway to possibly put a check and balance against this. The only thing I can think of is another competitor - and godaddy and others are not good compared to them at grabbing domains - the last 30 or so with godaddy have all failed. Anyone with any ideas how to put in a check and balance against these guys? |

I speak to Nelson quite a few times. I don't think this happens to be honest. I know sometimes it appears this way but it's not really in their interests in the long term.

We are currently running the domains through trademark processes and other legal steps so we will not disclose now - but soon they will be promoted. Just a FYI - for one of the domains - we already received an offer to buy it for $22K - but we rejected the offer. The poor guy/girl who didn't pay his renewal. ![]() |

I noticed some strange bidding on an auction, but couldnt possibly tell if it was them bumping up the price.

This is what worries me about SnapNames... I once bid for a domain with 3 other people.. I was 3rd in line if 2 members above me couldn't pay for the domain... it turns out that the 2 other members couldn't in fact pay for the domain name and I ended up having to buy it.. imagine if i went on a bidding war with them.. and i won.. i wouldn't know if i'm bidding against a qualified individual..
suggestion: every bidder must deposit $60, if they bid on a domain name and can't pay for it.. they lose out on $60.. and yes.. HALVAREZ IS EVERYWHERE!! |

I used them years ago and got my domain. It seemed very honest and no games. I don't know about these days though.
