BIZ/MANAGEMENT Thread : Check out this project manager!!!!

First

Thanks to Chase for pointing this out to me. I have been looking for something like this for years.

Open Source
Free
Simple MySql DB + PHP4.2+

Allows me to manage my adult interests, my sound and lighting and dj brokering, and my mainstream seo interests in one easy web based environment.

Fuck this is Awesome.

If you are a project manager or have many streams of income from diff places, this is the answer to maintaining it all.

www.dotproject.net

www.dotproject.net/demo

passes are guest and guest or admin and admin but some dickface always changes it sometime throughout the day.

the admins reset it as much as possible. fuckheads they are, i guess they take pride in fucking up shit for other people.

mostly because it is web based and it blows outlook or other PM software out of the box. its stripped down and has jsut the basics.

designed to handle multiple companies, clients, tasks, progressions of tasks. so much stuff that outlook wont do.

yeah pretty much.

the main main main thing is that it is web based, i can back it up and store it on a jump drive in a safe and i can get it from the treo handheld anywhere. i hate having 15 years of contacts and data on something that is mobile and that i can, and do lose frequently.

Something I definitely would have considered pre PDA... but since that has entered my life... why deal with anything I can't have accessible to me at all times throught the day, connection to the net or no...

web based all day baby. backup dump in 5 secs. what if you lose your pda and you don't have it backed up? etc etc.

i'll take web based storage with backup anyday to pda. i will be using this with pda, but its jsut nice to have the web based environment.

what software would you use on a pda for project management and contacts etc etc.

please don't say outlook. if so, then you aren't that serious about project and contact management. this is not a diss. merely and observation.

dotproject is amazing if you are a project manager.

Looks good for a webbased PM tool. A good offline windows tool I use thats pretty similar to this is Devplanner, you can get it at devplanner.com. pretty simple stuff though.

That is pretty cool, I use www.norada.com I got to pay for it but this just allows me to work and have all my info handy at all time without having to carry one of my computers with me.

Airek let me know when you are all setup so I can take a look at it. How was your shower this morning?

My only question *and forgive my programming ignorance* but if it's open source, wouldn't that make it easier for people to crack and find holes in? Is there a way to keep it local and not available on the net?

the whole idea and value to me is that it is web based.

password protect a directory on the domain that you want to use it on.

the level of security that you want is up to you. a serious, password with numbers, symbols, and letters is pretty solid with htaccess.

bottom line is anything can be hacked.

i wouldn't let the fact that its open source deter me. if you want to be really secure there are methods and things that you can take.

Ohhhhhh talk about a can of worms.

Open Source projects are way more secure than traditional "closed source" alternatives. Holes are found quickly and addressed publicly and fixes are provided almost instantly. Your average closed-source software company will have X amount of programmers, whereas an open source project can have literally tens of thousands of programmers going over the same code.

Examples? Internet Explorer versus Firefox, which has more security issues? Windows versus Linux or FreeBSD... Microsoft has been caught hiding security holes for months on end whereas a hole discovered in a product like Apache or Sendmail is addressed instantly and published on tons of sysadmin-based news channels.
