So I bought these mags+tires from a BMW forum...

paid 1600$ for 19" BMW M3 tires and the rims.

I get them, take them to BMW to get them installed, and they say that no way these tires can be used on the road, they are way too dangerous with not enough thread.

I message the guy, and he tells me that he sold them "as is" and that I should have judged by the pictures.

He also mentionned in his selling post that the tires had 60%+ thread left.

Buying new tires will cost me 2000$ at the dealership, and probably 1700$ anywhere else, so I don't want to spend another big amount.

What would you do?

the only way to buy wheels is

a) rims, no tires

or

b) rims with brand new tires

anything in between and, well, you know.

500USD per tire? Are they made of gold?

Serious, I'm not sure what exact sizes the tires are. But

P ZERO ROSSO Asimmetrico 255/40 ZR19 100Y XL are 300 EURO here. And The Netherlands is DAMN expensive... So I'm sure you should get your size cheaper...

edit: I searched a lil for you:

Front: 225/40YR19
Serv. Desc: 93Y

Price: $308.00 (each)
Estimated Availability: In Stock

Take a look her, for your exact size(and price)

What do you pay for it with? When someone has paypal, I usually don't use paypal to paypal transfer, I pay with my VISA at Paypal as though I am a new customer and then chargeback when I send VISA the picture of the tire, his as-is statement and the 60% tread left statement.

For what its worth, BMW is just covering their asses... I have driven thousands of kilometers on tires with the steel cords showing. If you're afraid of getting your hands dirty with 12 minutes of light work, take them to Joes Garage down the street and have them swap them. You'll be fine and there's no danger.

$1600 for used 19s and tires is not that great a price though...

you are missing the point, the dealership said that the tires are NOT safe for the road, it is regardless of who is installing them

and yes, he told me 60%+ thread left, and there wasn't.

No, my point was actually that dealerships will do two things, err on the side of caution, and try to sell you new things.

Obviously you saw the tires upon buying them, just look at them, you can see how much tread is left.

I don't think you guys are understanding the situation

buying the new tires and rims will have cost me somewhere close to 4000-5000$

the people on this forum get rid of their tires and rims almost immediately after getting their car in order to swap them for new ones, and they sell them for quite cheap most of the time

I was told the tires had 4000 miles on them

now be honest with yourself, if a tire only has 4000 miles on them, and you are buying them for literally a THIRD of the retail price, you wouldn't take it? you would go spend 4-5k on "new ones" and put on 4k miles on it in a month anyways?

come on

Tires and brakes are the most important parts on a car. So, I wouldn't buy some tires with only 60% left in order to save a few bucks.

Frequent tire changes are the price you pay for owning a performance car.
If you got a complete set of clean M-spokes for 1600 it was still a good deal.
If the guy sold you the OEM conti's those are garbage tires anyhow.

If the tires were unsafe you would know it immediately before even taking them to the dealership. The dealership is trying to sell you tires. Show us the pics of the tread of the tires. Or goto an autoparts store and buy a tire wear tester. Its a small spring loaded deal that pushes out and measures the tread depth.

Here this should help too.

Quote:
How to Check Tread
When the tread is worn down to 1/16 of an inch, tires must be replaced.

All tires have "wear bars," which are small, raised bars of rubber in the groove that indicate when tires are worn out. If your tread is worn down to the wear bars, it's time for a new tire.

A penny is a reliable tool to check tire tread.
1. Take a penny and put Abe's head into one of the grooves of the tire tread. If part of his head is covered by the tread, you're driving with the legal amount of tread.
2. If you can see all of Abe's head, it's time to replace the tire.

Visually check your tires for signs of uneven wear. You may have irregular tread wear if there are high and low areas or unusually smooth areas. Also make sure no nails or other objects are embedded in the tire. Consult your tire dealer as soon as possible if you see problems.

Tips ....

Never buy used loose tires, ever ... There is a better than even chance at least one will have damage to the bead area from dismounting. Never buy wheels that can't be returned if one is bent.

The owners of major dealerships don't need the little money made from people bringing in their own parts. Especially used parts. Which you did. By installing they are also giving their consent as experts that everything is ok. Thank American lawsuits and the deep-pocket theory.

Also what happens if the tires pull, vibrate, had been repaired from a nail, suffered internal damage from low air pressure, had the WRONG LUG NUTS for the wheels, etc ..... There is no upside for the dealer only potential problems.

They had 4000 miles on them... 4000 miles of autocross and parkinglot burnouts.

Good luck. The relatively simple 17's I put on my GTI list at over $300cad, retail around $225-250 depending on where I find them (michelin).

Dealerships will sometimes determine if a part needs replaced based on the next scheduled service interval. You may have 6-9 thousand miles left on tires or brakes but if the next scheduled service is 10,000 miles away common sense says replace now.

bdjuf,

It sucks you got burned on buying upgrades for your car over the internet. I'd be fucking pissed too. Then again, after seeing all your threads about material shit on this board, I'm really not too torn about your situation.

1. Buyer beware.
2. It fucking sucks to get burned.
3. Just live and learn.

Again man. I do feel bad you got ripped. Another part of me doesn't give a shit because your continuing situation of material gathering is so broadcast.

*shrug*

If you get your $$$ back,I still have the Milli's off the M3 I just traded in.
Most everyone that every commented said they liked the looks of these better than the OEM M-spokes,just because you don't see these everyday.
They were my winter wheels. They are posted around forsale at a few car forums for under a grand. And I have credit card processing,so I can take visa,mc or amex.
