One thing I haven't figured out about Japan yet, is why many ATMs close at night...

The best ATMs for international withdrawals are the Post Office ones, and they close at 5pm on weekends and 7pm during the week. Japan is still a cash based society and in many many places they don't accept credit/debit cards. So this means that if there's a slight chance you'll go on a drinking binge, you should go to the ATM before 5pm.
