From what I guess, your (mail)servers are even to busy to send out the email that is supposed to be sent, thats why the login hangs - your servers are flooded.
An ideal setup would have been: To check if the login goes through (mine always did, no probs until now), if OK - don't do anything.
If login fails: Send password once and flag the account with a temp flag, until the new password has been used to login successfully.
Plus, state in BIG RED LETTERS what the user has to do and the email where the pass has been sent to (maybe *** it a little for add. security) so user knows where to look.
Just an idea, could be expanded.
