laptop ram upgrade help

I am about to go buy more ram for my laptop
right now i think it gots liek 256 or whatever
i got the type that i need to buy and all that
So before i went to buy it i decided to open up the laptop to see what i was getting my self into
i un screwed the little pannel that gives me access to the ram slot / processor and all that

but my ram slot is empty???? is that normal?
If so - i know with a regular pc you cant put a 512 chip next to a 256 or it will fuck your shit up

is that the same case with laptop's???

go to http://www.crucial.com/ it'll most likely tell you how to install and if the bank is empty how much you can add. also it's not uncommon to have the memory banks empty by default there could be ram built onto the motherboard. i had a laptop like that once.
