What will be good rates for you will depend on your location (state). I currently have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida...but when I was in Texas I had my son covered by UniCare while my (former) employer had Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas for me.

I know there's been a lot of threads about insurance and just to throw this out there for those not covered...

a catastrophic injury/illness policy (for me) in Florida is only $32 a month which covers me (37) and my 3-year old son. There's no excuse to not have coverage.

I have a full coverage PPO but if you can't afford that you certainly CAN afford covering your ass against a major illness or injury.

That's my current train of thought. I am not sure I can afford some uber policy that covers everything. But I need something in place to avoid a total financial wipeout.

Location=Indiana. Thanks for the company names, everyone. I will be checking them out.

Correct.

I have always had Blue Cross in someway shape or form even when I was working for the telco's and before being self employed.

It sucks a bit being self employed because my B.C. doesn't cover dr's visits, and the prescriptions are a bit whacky. But luckily I rarely need them.

I personally prefer Blue Cross for myself being self employed because their rates are always the same. So whether you are healthy, develop diabetes, or anything. It's always the same for your age group because they take everyone.

When I met with some insurane guy about 6 months back to listen to alternatives. A lot of them were cheaper. But then they could also raise your rates if you go to much, get some serious illness, or other things. So their premiums could fluxuate should you get diabetes for example.

Some of them covered more, like dr's visits. But a lot of their caps and such were lower along with their premiums. You do not think of those things when you are healthy, and if I did not have my family history.. I prolly would never give much thought to caps, deductables, and the rest either.

But for me, if I was sick, injured, in the hospital. I do not want to be thinking about fucking caps, premiums, being dropped, and the rest fo the horseshit. Nor would I want my family worrying about it, or my business going under. So I will pay more on the front end, and should something happen, then I can rest comfortably in my hospital bed, and family can sleep at night not worrying if I am going to die in the street, or on a bed.
