Why Is The World Cup A Big Hit In North America This Time?

the TV ratings for the World Cup are way the fuck up in the US and Canada - ESPN is killing with it - i wonder why it's catching on now?

Firstly, there are more people that are from countries or cultures where football is popular in the country now. Secondly, the generation that played it as kids are now parents and can afford cable.

there were millions of people from those countries already in the US in 2002 and 1998 and soccer has been a huge sport with kids in North America for a long time - myself - i think the Internet has changed Americans and Canadians to a lesser extent - interacting with people on the Internet from Europe and elsewhere has made people less ethnocentric and more interested in things non-American.

I can see two possible reasons:
                1. Because we bash the Americans here to stop being rednecks and they go and tell their friends, who tell their friends, who tell their friends...
                2. "Soccer" being gay, as they say, a lot of Northern Americans turned gay since 2002.
