i've never understood that either and when i inquire re: the fax machine it is usually the fax machine sitting out in the office for anyone to walk by and swipe my info
It depends on the type of hosting. For large scale important hosting, defiantly. Actually, I'd appreciate this security measure. I wouldn't mind faxing it back for verification when asking for the root password to be reset etc.
Most commonly though, I think that a lot of quality domain name registrars are doing this now. I've had to fax in my ID a couple of times to get some passwords.
Most hosting companies will require you to fax your ID and/or front and back of your credit card when getting a dedicated server.
Got to be joking!!
Sure, there is nothing wrong with providing all reasonable data to enable hosting, ie.. company name, address, contact, contract blah, but no reason whatsoever to provide personal ID's.

Exactly, if it's a matter of national security, it's one thing. But, basic hosting is practically an inalienable right these days.

Fuck national security or inalienable rights - it's a business transaction like any other.
If there is a "national security" problem - get the fuck out of the US and to a less paranoid country and have "inalienable rights" which are not even discussed.
PS Ya sure won't be asked for Photo ID crap to enable hosting in any "normal country".

Again, it's only for a small virtual account ! Maybe i would understand if it was for a couple of servers or just even one but geeeeeeeee the price for a hole year doesn't even match up the price of a small server for only A MONTH
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

If I was paying by a rescindable payment method, i.e. credit card or open account and the amount was more than chump change, yes. But if I was paying by eGold or ePass or some non-rescindable payment method, who I am is none of their business, its irrelevant to the transaction.
Mmm.. If you paid and don't care to provide a DNA sample and the host has a problem with that - chargeback. (Especially since you have not been "approved" )
OK then.. what hosting company assume they have rights to the DNA test results?
Non-secure fax machines,..give me a break. You dont have to use fax. There is always the option of scanning it and sending it encrypted via email.
name one hosting comapny that provides tht please, not to mention how the fuck ya send an encryped email
moreover, there are billions of dollars transacted on the web yearly and NONE of that needs anyone to fax anything in, let alon make a fuckin scan and encryp it and email, gimme fuckin break
Guys... come on. Speaking as a host, it's not that unreasonable of a request. I'm not saying that I regularly ask for such things but you have to remember that sometimes we get people asking for service that raise a number of red flags. I am of the belief that it is in the best interests of every hosting company to know it's clients if for any other reason than to protect their other clients from the trouble that some people cause. At the end of the day your host is someone that you need to develop a trust relationship with, I think - just like your banker, lawyer, accountant. I know there are many of you that disagree and like anonimity - I'm just coming from the perspective of being active and involved with my clients and always looking out for their best interests.
