I'm really fucking pissed off.

I checked a domain today, saw it was available... and got really stoked about it. I just sat down to register it about 8 hours later, and it said it was taken.

God fucking FUCKING DAMN! I wonder how this could happen.

If you ever search for a domain name and its available, you better take it right then... otherwise its gone... try contacting whoever bought it, they'll prolly sell it to you.

So what do you suppose is going on here? I feel like this is some super shady shit. This isn't a coincidence. It can't be. It's not like the domain I wanted had some history as a site previously. It had never been registered before.

there is a lot of packet sniffers who do this, it's known to happen at a ton of the big registrars and at whois.sc

generally they will drop it after 5 days if it gets no traffic

Don't worry, it's up for sale shortly

On a serious note... if you see a domain and want it, register it right in the same second, otherwise you're getting 0wn3d

Tell me how they'd drop a domain after they register it? Registration is in 1 year increments, right?

Packet sniffing is one way. another is that someone from the registrar takes it, by having a friend buy it.

I don't really feel sorry for you. If you find an available domain that you think is good or that you are "stoked" about, just buy the damn thing on the spot. It isn't like domain names cost much these days.

Getting all worked up about a name and then coming back 8 hours later to get it is just dumb.

Better luck next time.
