How to get residual traffic

Hm. Another thread got me thinking this:

How do you get a stream of residual traffic. I know that once you have traffic, you can trade with others and increase it. But - apart from buying it- how do you get that initial traffic flow going?

Are there any "standard" methods for doing that?
