I just got the new 40inch Sony Wega XBR with matching stand.

Got them both for $2,500. I have a friend that hooked me up.

TV retails for $3,500 and stand is $500.

If anyone needs one let me know.

The price has come way down. Last year I bought the 61" HD and I think it was about 9 grand.

I don't know about big screen, but in my opinion Sony as a brand is over rated.

My oldest daughter bought a Sony and after two weeks it developed problems so she had to exchange it for another one. The second one has been working trouble free for about two years.

My oldest son bought a Sony and it didn't work at all from day one. So he returned it and bought a different brand.

I ordered a Sony through JC Penny and returned it the first day as it had about a ten inch spot burned into the screen and I ordered a different brand.

I have a toshiba 65" widescreen HDTV and it was sharper than the sony 57". I love it.

I've heard the next step up is Pioneer, but they are supposidly 50% more in cost and then louvre (sp)

I just bought a "HDTV ready" Sony and added a $400 HDTV decoder and I was up and running with HDTV satellite signals. There are only a couple channels in HDTV right now up here but it is still pretty sweet. We don't get the off the air signals like in the U.S. that you can pick up with an antenna.

Plus now I get to watch DVDs in progressive scan and play my Xbox games in 480P too. (Apparently they'll be some games out in 1080i or 720P soon.)

If you've got 5 grand or so to blow on a set I would look at a digital light projector instead. A 10 foot screen sure beats 65", if you've got the space and a room without too many windows. (They use the same projection technology that guys like Lucas are pushing for in the theaters. )

Yeah thats the one I was looking at. I saw it at Circuit City. I think the Sony's have better clarity than any of the other TV's. Anyone else think so?

Depends on how they are set up. The Toshiba looks better out of the box but if you tweak the Sony's right then they are just as clear IMO.

Only trouble with trying to compare them in the store is that they have them under flourescent lighting set up by some guy who's probably making a buck over minimum wage, and they have to set the contrast and brightness to compete with the overpowering lighting, plus they're usually just running the same feed in to all the sets in the store using an RF connection, which doesn't really tell you squat. To do a fair comparison you pretty well have to calibrate them using a DVD like Video Essentials. I always try to read the reviews in some of the popular home theater magazines before I make a big purchase.

they arn't cheaper here - toshiba big screen hdtv units in winnipeg are about 20% more money, but worth it for their superior picture.

I did a lot of research before buying my HDTV, and I ended up getting a 65" Mitsubishi. I LOVE this TV, and can't say enough good things about it.

Typically, I don't think Sony's are worth the money. You end up paying for the name, only to get an inferior product.

That said, I own a Sony Cybershot DSC-F707 that I absolutely love.

Oh, one more tip for you... After you make your decision, you might want to go to Sears to make the purchase (if it's a model they carry). They will price match any price you bring them - even online retailers. Tough to beat that price...

Yeah - I heard about these and really wanted one but couldn't get it. They were too big for the delivery vechile that the store in winnipeg I bought mine from uses so they won't bring them in any more. As it was my 65" had about a half inch to spare when we brought it in the door (had to remove the door to do it) so I doubt I could have gotten a bigger one into the house.

I bought a 50" Hitachi Ultravision about 4 years ago with the screen saver. One of the best looking big screens at the time but I will be getting rid of it when I move to Vancouver. To tell you the truth I am not too crazy about the big screens anymore and I would most likely opt to buy a 40" Sony XBR rather than a 65" big screen. Just personal preference I guess...

I'm surprised to hear that. My research indicated pretty much the exact opposite - rave reviews for the Mitsu, and not so hot stuff for Toshibas. This was about 3 or 4 months ago though...

You should have the guns cleaned at least yearly. That could be your problem.

Ok, having been in the buisness for years This is my Mittsibishi - the worst - leaky tube problems, new models have sheild installed otherwise tubes leak and wreck the boards= big money to repair.
Tosiba- good Tv not too many problems
Sony - I like - some have problems but good warranty program.
Pioneer - probally the most expensive, Very hard to work on and if you have a problem it will cost Big - pretty reliable though
Hitatchi - very few problems
Rca- samsung -panasonic = junk
I would go with pioneer or sony

HDTV is over rated - most people arent happy with them if they put a regular anolog signal into them they look pixellized, sort of grainy. Lot of complaints. Will be great if they ever get more HD sources to use with them

Dont buy sony unless all you want to watch is hd stuff because for regular cable it has horrible black bars.

Anyone seriously interested in getting a tv out to read hometheaterspot or panny.tv before making a purchase.

They are nice, thats the model I was looking at , but limited space, so I ended up with a 53" Hitachi ultrasan Hd. Put all the bells and whistles on it, I find it fantastic, and the price was less as well.

How's the projector when there's light in the room though? The one's I saw kinda sucked unless it was pretty dark.
