I just got off the phone with the Westin Diplomat who confirmed their ENTIRE property is non smoking...

Now, for those who don't care....move on...

BUT - for those who do care......bloody hell....

Is this going to affect who goes and who doesn't?

Point is this. There are plenty who smoke....in our industry....especially when they drink...and we DO drink..

Well, then, he's got a better grip on things than the Diplomat who told me no you can't smoke anywhere on their property, no exceptions for this trade show. I just got off the phone with them. I even asked if special arrangements were being made for this convention during these dates....and, because I simply do not accept the lunacy of this, I would think special arrangements would be made....so I spoke, also, to a supervisor....who said there is no smoking on the premises, including the pool and surrounding areas....

Smoking wil be outlawed within our lifetime. Possibly drinking too, depending on the route the country takes in the next election. Frankly I'm surprised adult still lives. The fact the net is NOT confined to the USA is its greatest asset.

I could understand 'indoors' but pool area? Is the beach considered their 'property' too? Will all networking be done on the beach so smokers can smoke and the people wanting to talk to the smokers about business, can/will most likely only find them there?

No disrepect to the smokers here, but I don't understand the fuss. Smoking is slowly becoming more and more non-excepted. I realize some people are addicted but it does kill and why should non-smokers have to put up with smoke around them. 2nd hand smoke kills too. I used to be a smoker for almost 15 years. When I moved to San Diego, you can't smoke anywhere, so it made it easier to quit.

People talk about freedom and they should be able to smoke. Well, I look at it as freedom also means I shouldn't have to worry about breathing in things that smell like crap and cause disease.

It won't stop me from attending; but, to try to stop attendees from smoking is ludicrous....it just won't happen.

I'm glad to see AVN making those special arrangements. That hotel simply makes too much money from us to let a little smoke get in the way of all those fat tips and prepaid damage money.

That is such a silly argument. What about the rights of non-smokers not to be forced to inhale your poison? Alcohol is legal too but you can't just walk around town with a beer in your hand. There has to be rules and as the hotel is private property, they can make any rules they like.

Personally, I don't smoke but I'm also not offended by people who smoke outdoors. Smoke all you want out by the pool, doesn't bother me one bit as long as you don't blow that rank shit in my face.

Good on AVN for getting them to bend the rules a little to accomodate the high percentage of smokers at this convention. Nice to see that they're listening to what people want

I feel as others do. It's a nasty habit that I got into when I thought smoking was 'cool'. I don't smoke much; maybe a half pack a day, even at shows, even when I'm drinking...

BUT.

If I'm smoking in my room, who am I hurting?

If I'm smoking by the pool, the air, even as humid as it is in Florida, makes a fabulous ventilation system.

I think there are excuses made for all kinds of behaviours...yet, smokers are vilified and criminalised.....

This thread was not about a debate on the merits or demerits of smokers and our nasty habit. It was to confirm or deny something the Westin said to me and now AVN has stated otherwise....I'm okay with this.
