Many porn site domains to become illegal under new U.S. law.

Bill Would Ban Porn Site Names That Appeal To Kids

Porn site owners who use domain names likely to entice children could be fined and imprisoned under legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.

The "Truth in Domain Names Act," would make it a crime to use a misleading Web site name to trick minors into visiting pornographic Web sites.

The legislation would outlaw porn sites with seemingly benign names, such as www.teens.com, www.cheerleaders.com, and www.whitehouse.com.

Indiana Republican Mike Pence said he introduced the bill following a recent hearing in which FBI agents testified that innocuous domain names are one of the tools pedophiles commonly use to prey on children.

Violators could be fined $250,000 and sentenced for up to two years in jail.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...-2002May3.html

What a bunch of bullshit. Imagine the government tried to tell you what you could name your movie or your magazine or your book or your kids or anything else.

How can they decide what would be acceptable and what wouldn't? Obviously, something like 'teens.com' might get some type-ins from underage people, but there's thousands of domains that fall in between.. it'd be VERY unfair for them to decide the name was unfit.

Hmmm... ICANN could pull the plug on any domain out there if they really wanted to most likely. Now if they can outlaw certain meta names like spice girls etc!

even if this law does pass I don't think it would survive the courts. Also, like any Net based law you have to remeber that not only USA based companies own domain names. If a Non-USA based company owned a suspect domain name the US gov. could do nothing about it.

While I think there is way too much gray area there, I do have a problem with using Nickelodeon charcaters and such as domain names and directing them to porn sites...of course I'm sure Nick is very protective of their intellectual property rights........

although, I don't understand why anyone would want kids on their porn sites...kids don't have credit cards....they waste bandwidth and can't spend money..........unless you're a larger TGP looking to keep that hit counter (penis yardstick) as pumped up as possible..............

No but ICANN can deal with them anywhere as long as it deals with com, net, org and some others I believe... Since the US Govt basically started ICANN in some way or another, no doubt they would do what they were (told) asked.

Read the charter over there. They have SOUL control of said extensions.

great, first US law outlaws internet radio, now it shuts down any domains that it thinks are sexually "wrong".

pisses me the fuck off that violence and evil is acceptable, but a four letter word TEEN causes them to go crazy.

im glad ive got a dot CX domain =) , all i need to do is get my hosting out of tennesse... but damn they do good hosting there

=(

Yes, very much am I to be so agreeing with you.

However, by the same token, why parents let their kids surf at will without the use of monitoring software like net-nanny/cybersurf etc is also beyond me. There are polititians who are riding the whole "protect the children" slogan to the max, yet it really is the job of the parents themselves to do that.

But just as the motives of those polititians are transparent, so too are those of the webmasters that cram in blatently obvious keywords that will attract kids. Those sites that are overly blatant about such keywords really should be shut down. Using the word "teens" shouldn't be part of the issue, but using the phrase "teen help line" or "teen drop-in center" or the word "disney" or "teletubby" etc in such a way as to be obviously fishing the SE's for kids doing searches is just wrong.

Are you trying to tell me that sex.com isn't the most popular type-in domain amongst teens. Give me a break. Any 16 year old boy is typing that one, oh, I'd guess about 200 domains before he makes it to typing in "teens.com"

Introducing legislation, and it becoming a law are two very different things. If you are truly concerned, pick up a pen and send a letter to your congressman stating your objection.

whining about it here certainly will do little, if any good

Hi Everyone! I'm new here.
good point...

if I remember correctly, it wasn't always that you could have "fuck" in your domain -- I was really suprised when I saw gofuckyourself.com.......

anyway I don't think this will work unless they make the legislation VERY specific and it will need to be updated every day because pop culture is always coming up w/ new names... Who would update the list of forbidden names? I have a feeling that freedom of speech would protect our access to the internet -- NOBODY will have time to review every site on the net to ensure that everyone has content that conceptually matches the URL of the domain .

Probably 10 years from now though the action figures will be anatomically correct anyway and the world will finally tell the Christians to fuck off. Kids can always go outside and watch animals fuck... Sex isn't exactly a big secret.

Or maybe they should require stores to sell computers with the built in Child protection software ?

and we could be given code to put on our site hidden in the HTML that will tell the software not to go to our sites ??

I guess my main 3 domains would be safe with such as
in them

sex, cum, free, sluts, and pussy in them...
and one I sold started with xxx.
Don't want to get sued..

I hope these would pass muster...

I still wonder hope much tax payer's money these people
are wasting on this kind of stuff,,,,,it will never fly never...

I do not care what law you pass... A computer IS NOT
a baby sitter and never will be one... A TV IS NOT a baby sitter
and never will be one...

What this is.... The dam Govt. trying to protect Kid's... if you believe that you've got rocks for brains...

I'll say this again most of the people trying to pass these laws
more than likely don't know how to turn on a computer. God Dam Pin Head's...

Lots of young teens key in 'sex' looking for sex education sites like scarleteen.com .. wonder if this means they can't use that word either....
too big of an argument with this mess. Then they'll wanna control the keywords used... It had to happen one day that these so called do-gooders are gonna try to rule the net with bullshit federal guidelines.. they keep forgetting that the net is worldwide and they don't rule the world.. no matter how bad they'd like to.

I'd like to think that this will NEVER pass muster - I own grammas.com (and I don't target kids at ALL) which would probably be targetted by them.
I'm not sure WHO would be the one to decide what site a child would go to or not and thus determine which domains would be considered suspect - but I agree with previous posters - it is ULTIMATELY - a parent's responsibility to monitor their children's internet use. I'm so sick and tired of no one taking responsibility for their own actions.. or NONactions - it's always someone else's fault! Now Big Brother is coming up with another brilliant plan.

I had a link to a site a long time ago that was hosted at FSN, the url was like "pokemon.xxxasians.com"

I got a nasty letter in the mail from Nintendo of America forcing me to remove the link, saying that searches on 'pokemon' were bringing up my page.

The government always has to portay us as pedophiles. If they said they were going after sites that show consenting adults having sex with other consenting adults they probably wouldn't get much public support.

Like just about every other piece of legislation Congress has proposed related to controlling porn on the net, this one is going to have serious constitutional problems with it, and will more likely than not die in the courts. The courts have - thus far - been pretty consistent about striking down legislation that is overly broad or vague, and I think that this one qualifies on both counts.

This US lawmaker's suggestion is so stupid it's almost pathetic.
It's been a long time since I heard of anything so stupid. You would think a guy like that would think through the consequences and widespread effects of such a bill...
I would expect it to come from some oppressive religious islamic country, but the US??? It's almost embarrassing.

His point that we shouldn't pray on children is ok, but to suggest that by simply owning a domain name like cheerleaders.com it makes us criminals is so stupid it makes me laugh.

And ofcourse we have a warning page on cheerleaders.com - we don't want the kids in there...

But let me just get this straight.... a movie like American Pie features nothing but person under 18 wanting to have sex with each other (like EVERY teen movie from Hollywood)? It's ok to scoop in millions on that, but to own cheerleaders.com is a crime if you have pornographic content there even though you not actively promote it to kids???

The political scene in the US is soooo filled up with big time hypocrisy that it's laughable.

So, if anyone has cheerleader traffic and believe that we'll keep cheerleaders.com let me know. We're looking for traffic and paying per signup and %

Over and out.

Targeting underage people wasnt the issue.. it was domain names that might target kids.. like young cheerleaders looking for a real cheerleader site and happening on a porn site because of the domain name.

I wonder if this is one of those bills that they threw together to throw in with other bills that they didn't want passed; knowing this one wouldn't pass, so the whole deal would fall through.. It happens all the time... That's why Clinton wanted the line item veto..

Why would someone want to entice children into a site? Children aren't noted as big spenders.

Gee I wonder why bills like this get introduced....

Duh!
It seems you got your name right. As far as I can see he said there was a link on his site to that domain - not he had the domain. It's worth learning to read posts properly before commenting on them.
Of course you can then argue he shouldn't have had the link but on a TGP or links site it can happen depending on how it's set up. The idiot is the guy who owns the URL and of course the one that can't read a post.

i love this thread.

maybe we should all stick together for the next election and put up some little banners to get a real president in office... it's unbelievable how much power we have in terms of exposure... porn is a part of every day life for most americans...

Yeah... that was before the current administration. For awhile I was getting worried becuase no matter what the fuck those bastards did after 9/11 it seemed that they had full support of the people. Glad to see people are starting to wake up and see the real agenda here. Hopefully this kind of bullshit will be fresh enough in everyone's minds in 2004 to make sure we get an overwhelming majority vote for SOMEONE ELSE. The best part is that Bush IS the republican candidate in "04". If he is the only competition the democrates have to worry about it should be a cake walk.
