Many porn site domains to become illegal under new U.S. law.
Bill Would Ban Porn Site Names That Appeal To Kids
Porn site owners who use domain names likely to entice children could be fined and imprisoned under legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday. The "Truth in Domain Names Act," would make it a crime to use a misleading Web site name to trick minors into visiting pornographic Web sites. The legislation would outlaw porn sites with seemingly benign names, such as www.teens.com, www.cheerleaders.com, and www.whitehouse.com. Indiana Republican Mike Pence said he introduced the bill following a recent hearing in which FBI agents testified that innocuous domain names are one of the tools pedophiles commonly use to prey on children. How can they decide what would be acceptable and what wouldn't? Obviously, something like 'teens.com' might get some type-ins from underage people, but there's thousands of domains that fall in between.. it'd be VERY unfair for them to decide the name was unfit.

even if this law does pass I don't think it would survive the courts. Also, like any Net based law you have to remeber that not only USA based companies own domain names. If a Non-USA based company owned a suspect domain name the US gov. could do nothing about it.

While I think there is way too much gray area there, I do have a problem with using Nickelodeon charcaters and such as domain names and directing them to porn sites...of course I'm sure Nick is very protective of their intellectual property rights........
although, I don't understand why anyone would want kids on their porn sites...kids don't have credit cards....they waste bandwidth and can't spend money..........unless you're a larger TGP looking to keep that hit counter (penis yardstick) as pumped up as possible..............

great, first US law outlaws internet radio, now it shuts down any domains that it thinks are sexually "wrong".
pisses me the fuck off that violence and evil is acceptable, but a four letter word TEEN causes them to go crazy. im glad ive got a dot CX domain =) , all i need to do is get my hosting out of tennesse... but damn they do good hosting there =( |

I'd like to think that this will NEVER pass muster - I own grammas.com (and I don't target kids at ALL) which would probably be targetted by them.
I'm not sure WHO would be the one to decide what site a child would go to or not and thus determine which domains would be considered suspect - but I agree with previous posters - it is ULTIMATELY - a parent's responsibility to monitor their children's internet use. I'm so sick and tired of no one taking responsibility for their own actions.. or NONactions - it's always someone else's fault! Now Big Brother is coming up with another brilliant plan.

I got a nasty letter in the mail from Nintendo of America forcing me to remove the link, saying that searches on 'pokemon' were bringing up my page. |

Like just about every other piece of legislation Congress has proposed related to controlling porn on the net, this one is going to have serious constitutional problems with it, and will more likely than not die in the courts. The courts have - thus far - been pretty consistent about striking down legislation that is overly broad or vague, and I think that this one qualifies on both counts.

This US lawmaker's suggestion is so stupid it's almost pathetic.
It's been a long time since I heard of anything so stupid. You would think a guy like that would think through the consequences and widespread effects of such a bill... I would expect it to come from some oppressive religious islamic country, but the US??? It's almost embarrassing. His point that we shouldn't pray on children is ok, but to suggest that by simply owning a domain name like cheerleaders.com it makes us criminals is so stupid it makes me laugh. And ofcourse we have a warning page on cheerleaders.com - we don't want the kids in there... But let me just get this straight.... a movie like American Pie features nothing but person under 18 wanting to have sex with each other (like EVERY teen movie from Hollywood)? It's ok to scoop in millions on that, but to own cheerleaders.com is a crime if you have pornographic content there even though you not actively promote it to kids??? The political scene in the US is soooo filled up with big time hypocrisy that it's laughable. So, if anyone has cheerleader traffic and believe that we'll keep cheerleaders.com let me know.
