So I kinda got into a fight last night.

My neighbor got all mad when I said I was downloading the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. She told me I was stealing and she didn't like that. I told her that we were going to have to agree to disagree about downloading. She didn't drop it.

I was told that downloading movie/music/TV shows was just like going into a music store and picking up a CD and then walking out. I told her that there was a big difference cuz that's shoplifting. She then asked me what I was going to do tomorrow night I said "Watching my stolen movie". She got mad and left.

What's your opinion on this?

That's like "agreeing to disagree" about the acceleration of gravity being 9.8m/s squared: it is, like it or not. Downloading a movie you didn't buy is clearly theft and clearly exactly the same as stealing it from a store, minus the cost of packaging.

I think stealing a physical product, something that has already been produced, packaged, purchased by a store owner and shelved for sale is different than downloading a digital copy of the same item.

And for people who say, "but the stores and the company lost your sale because you downloaded it", bullshit, just because you download a digital copy does not imply your only other option was to buy a copy. I could of just watched it at a friends house when he rented it? Or I could of watched a friends stolen copy without knowing it was fake, does that imply that I also stole it, or perhaps helped conspired to steal it?

I think digital downloads enter a very grey area of law...

I personally don't download movies from the internet or buy pirated DVD's and stuff. I get my music from allofmp3.com which I pay for each song or album downloaded.

I'm not judging you for doing so either tho. Its just my personal choice but I'd never call anyone a thief for downloading movies from the internet.

well also, if you think outside of the USA, e.g. AUS , then most tv shows and dvd's you can download aren't even out here yet, so even if we as consumers wanted to buy them, or watch them on tv we can't. DVD's we have to wait a few months (unless uber popular world wide launch), or even upto a year (tv shows) to be offered the choice to watch them / buy them "legally"

It's better to watch DVD , the quality is much better . But if you are low on finances you might give a go . And if you really liked the movie , be sure to go see it in the cinema / buy a dvd / rent a dvd . That's what i think .

Obviously if you paid to download it from a legitimate source with approval of the movie studio, it's not like shoplifting. It's like buying the DVD.
