Your whois.sc domain searches are not safe...

I can't find the thread from several days ago but... I found the following domains through the whois.sc domain spinner in the last couple of months and wrote them down for possible purchase:

eyecandylive.com (Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not grabbing it on the spot)
godscash.com
taintedcash.com (I definitely wouldn't have bought it but still.... )

I can't say for SURE that I didn't double-check their availability with any other service but I definitely found them through whois.sc

If you find a name with their NameSpinner program, you can be assured that it's easily found by others too. Not just whois.sc, but other registrars use it too. I believe it's also available using their API.

You have a point BUT.... those domains have been available for years. Why would they suddenly get snapped up right after I searched on them?

a few other people have posted this exact same experience...why doesn't every get together, compare the company that is registering the domains, and report them to the registrar in question?

Why are you suprised? I'm sure they exploit every possible revenue stream... Same with those PR searching places, I'm willing to bet money, they check out the logs to see how people SEO their sites, or where they get PR from, etc...
Even search engines sell feeds with search volume for each term...

domains i was looking for were also available for months and out of sudden got registered by the same company...

there were a couple of threads about this... don't be surprised!

i would never ever use www.whois.sc for whois searches!

I don't know what criteria they're using, assuming someone's actually doing this but I ran a test myself and the names didn't get registered.

I use whois.sc to get domain info, it's an easy tool. I don't use it to search for names, I use my own registrar for that, if I am searching it's because I am buying.

we know this happens. not much you can do about it

personally, I now check if a domain exists every other way except using a registrar - type in, search google...

then if it still looks available and I'm ready to buy, I check if it's available and grab it quick smart

I've said it before. Somehow there are still people that absolutely refuse to believe this is possible.

some domains that seem available in the name spinner are sometimes already registered.. i looked for a name a few days ago in there and it showed as inregistered in those name spinner checkboxes, but was registered since 2002

Bingo, this happens all the time, so many domains you think are available are actually registered because the whois server of some of the domain registrars are down all the time, especially GoDaddy. This has made some think there is some kind of conspiracy in taking domains being searched.

Now someone will post "there are millions of other people searching so the chances are you are not the first to think of those domains"..... blah blah blah

What some of you Einsteins don't get is that often the same company registers serveral of the domains right after you search for them.

Got it now? No? Let me restate that for you thick-headed fucks:

The same company registers several of the domains you have searched. And they do it with a few days of you performing the searches.

Ok, I feel better now.

We know this. you're not telling us anything new.

nothing you can do about it, so either register the good free domains quickly, or expect them to go.

this shit ain't rocket science

You're still querying at least one server on the net, which could be logging those queries... first step I do is "dig domain.com any" which asks for any name server records for that domain to be shown. Again, this is querying a server which may have logging (for unknown domains) enabled but it's a little more obscure than asking a WHOIS server.

Well it's kinda obvious IMO.. think of this.. why would anyone offer up a free service such as that and not ask money for it? Do you think people here set up porn sites just for fun?

Any sort of serious site like that that offers a quality service that is free, is going to have some reason behind it. Sure they are making some money on advertisers and so on.

However I've always thought the main reason behind a site like that is for R&D. Would be so easy to set up back end archiving to collect a database on unregestered domains on expiring domains and so on.

Not to mention the mailing lists.

I use whois.sc all the time but I never search for new domains on it.

That's the same reason I never use those free SEO tools you find everywhere.

http://whois.webhosting.info/ has the same reverse whois feature that whois.sc uses, but these guys give it for free, whois.sc charges per month for it.

The registrar is likely the source of the leaked data.

Oops, I meant...

The free search tool is likely the culprit.

BTW,

http://www.whois.sc

is now known as..

http://www.domaintools.com

read their TOS here:

http://www.domaintools.com/members/tos.html

i found this page interesting:

http://www.domaintools.com/info/privacy/

in particular this paragraph:

"With Whom Does Name Intelligence Share Information?
Name Intelligence may share information about you with advertisers, business partners, sponsors, and other third parties. However, we only divulge aggregate information about our users and will not share personally identifiable information with any third party without your express consent. Please be aware, however, that we will release specific personal information about you if required to do so in order to comply with any valid legal process such as a search warrant, subpoena, statute, or court order."
