Applying for a job

I am currently writing my cover letter for a job application whit an American corporations office in France. However, all my refrences/testimonial from previous employers are in Norwegian.

Can I translate these myself and send the translation + the original, or will I have to get an "official" translation?
(PS: there is a Norwegian allready employed at the relevant office)

What exactly is an "official" translation? My impression was that translation involves quite a bit of interpretation.

I was thinking a certified translator, so that they know I havent changed the testimonial.
