Hard to say. The tank and filters were about 1-1.3K. The sand was about $350, the rock is $10-$12 per pound and I think I have about 80 pounds. Then there is the cost of the fish and shrimp.

I keep a 55g and a 29g at home and we play with a 130g and 90g at work (all freshwater)
My home tanks are cichlid tanks -- 2 growing Managuensis (Jaguars), some Convicts and a few others. The small tank has 3 little Jags that hopefully grow to be placed in the 130g at work
My Jags breeding shortly after a wholesale gravel change:
And the last time they attempted to breed, they tore up the fake plants constantly hehe:

I used to have a salt water tank that was amazing, until I put in a Domino Damsel that I later referred to as "The Black Bastard". He terrorized everything in the tank until they died out of fear or starvation - literally.
Getting him out was no easy task but I did, too late to save the tank though. I'd love to start over and do it again - a lot of money, time and patience (and frustration) ... not to mention if you move homes, it will be a bigger chore than the rest of the house combined. But worth it
Here's a pic of a damsel like mine. He even looks mean. Bastard.
Just a note to anybody who's thinking of starting a saltwater aquarium...
1. Expect to shell out at least 5k for some decent equipment (tanks, lights, pumps, skimmer, calcium reactor, chiller).
2. Don't listen to the guy at the fish store, they make it sound easy, do some research at reefcentral.com instead.
3. Maintenance is a bitch, it's time consuming.
4. You can't eat the fish.
Go scuba diving at the Bahamas instead. It'll be much cheaper in the long run.
If you're a DIY freak and love fish don't listen to me.
I am into the fish.

Looks good guys!!
Cichlids are my fresh water fish of choice. I just got rid of an 86 gallon with Tanganyikan cichlids. I had a realy nice adult male Frontosa.
nice pics, you need some more live rock in that setup
i can't wait to get mine going again. i had a sweet 90 g reef setup i sold to my school when i moved away to college.
What you see there is about 70pounds of Figi and Florida live rock. I used to have a full reef about 4 years ago. I dont have time for that any more, reefs are wayyyyy to much work.
dude you need more rock and some corals in there! I get premium tonga branch and any other kind for about $3.50 a pound here, and livestock at wholesale.. got my 135gal setup a couple months ago.. will post some pics soon
oh and salwater fish could give a shit about "plants" they will get stressed however if there isn't enough rock to swim in and out of and hide in, and the more you make it look like a reef with corals, the happier they will be ;)
