However, I question business models that rely too heavily on Google.

axelcat 03-20-2006 10:49 AM

wow all that with just 4 servers very impressive

gornyhuy 03-20-2006 10:51 AM

God this makes me so sick with jealousy.

gornyhuy 03-20-2006 10:52 AM

Both from a tech-nerd perspective and a business perspective.

INNOVATION is a word that will get you PAID!

Drake 03-20-2006 10:59 AM

Is there a way to confirm that? I have no doubt he makes money but how can you be sure it's as much as he says? Just by his word alone? Everybody on GFY including me is a millionaire too.

It's just him and one other person (his wife i believe) who runs the site, he pays only 14k a month in server costs, Google loves him (apparently), he profits probaly close to 350k a month after advertising (if any).

Do you want to question that business model again?

Google bans him he goes to one of the other contextual ad companies.

Funny I was just reading about this guy over at threadwatch the other day.It seems a few years ago he posted on WMW "I make about $40/day off 1200 visitors." hehe.

You're pushing nicotine patches online and you're giving your opinion on a site that brings in 400k a month??????

It's not hard to be a millionaire these days.

So what is so hard to believe?

CheeseFrog 03-20-2006 12:37 PM

Cool, but I still like Myspace a lot better. Speaking of which, don't they run Adsense too? Hmm, I wonder what they rake in.

polle54 03-20-2006 12:48 PM

That is what I was going to ask too

Sharky01276 03-20-2006 12:54 PM

Wow that really is quite impressive..

slapass 03-20-2006 12:59 PM

That is freaking awesome. I think the only downside is if he puts dating sites out of business and his ad revenue gets cut in half because of it.

I love shit like this. Just when you think the last new mouse trap was invented. Bammm!!!

:thumbsup

At the end of the day I'm not happy to see sites like this work.

Why, you ask?

Because it does shift consumers to using the free dating site model. That model doesn't profit even 5% as much as the paid model which pays us accordingly. Free dating kills that industry and in turn our profits.

In 5 years all of them wil be free. Goldrush=Over.

But, was it necessary? No, there was no reason to lowball the industry just to get in the door. Sure it takes just a little bit more work to make money in that game but as all of us here know, it's not hard to get people to signup to damn near anything. Someone with his immense automation skills could have done better going the paid route.

Oh, I dunno... I guess only an idiot who makes $4 million a year would do that. You and me are much smarter.

With a database that size he could start charging membership any time he feels like it.

emthree 03-20-2006 03:04 PM

Easy way out.
But I guess it works.

It would seem that way if every new dating site wasn't free. Free dating is taking over.

Violetta 03-20-2006 03:10 PM

that's a shitload of money!

Doctor Dre 03-20-2006 03:18 PM

We have something like that but we open local franchises. Earning really good revenue. If you wanna be famous in your town and got some promo money to invest, hit me up on icq ;) All the club owners will be on your ass so they get a peice of the pie ;)

I don't believe this. Just a week and a half ago we we're talking about free dating! Fuck me. Oh well, good for this guy! Glad to see he's doing very well it. It's an interesting approach he took that's for sure. Just awesome...and he deserves every penny he makes for seeing the potential and doing it his way.

adsense is easy but if someone took the time much more money could be made with that amount of traffic

He is obviously doing something right....

using only text ads. Why go fuck it up ?

Everyone seems to have an opinion on this guy :1orglaugh but probaly couldn't even come close to replicating it.

yup, everyone's a millionaire ... in their mind

dbavaria 03-20-2006 04:40 PM

The guy seems to have spent so much time on the server side that he couldn't even make a clear header image, its all distorted/pixelated.

MrLuvr 03-20-2006 04:50 PM

I find it funny that he considers himself in the same league as Match.com. Match is doing more than a hundred million dollars a year in profit.

Also, I think a lot of his Adsense revenue comes from other dating sites Google ads. He puts down those same dating sites that he makes most of his money off. Quite ironic really.

What would happen if all the dating sites excluded him from their adsense campaign?

He says himself that undercutting a pay based model is the best way to make money via adsense.

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum89/12751.htm (you'll need a valid login)

"4. Do not enter markets with a lot of competition monitized via adsense. Try and undercut paid content markets by offering a free service, or better yet create your own market."

xApster 03-20-2006 11:57 PM

I am pretty sure I have seen this guy advertise his sites on TV in the Toronto area as well.

one important question though - people are still joining match.com and other sites in droves, so what features do they offer that plentyoffish.com doesn't?

I don't think there is any way to tell if his Google links convert or not, is there? As far as I can tell, the stats just show them coming from Google Syndication, not the name of the site. If there is a way to know which sites the clicks come from, i woud love to know.

And no, they are not joining Match.com in the same droves they were before. Myspace and other social networking sites have cut into their market in a big way.

Ha, what would you do advertise competition directly? Adsense per click pays so much in those markets that you make far more from the companies paying for branding than you do from any sponsors you want to sell.

Different fucking ads would show up and the morons would click like always. Make sense?

good point. I'm pretty sure you can track which sites AdSense clicks come from, and then filter out the sites that don't work for you using site exclusion.

on the other hand, they may perhaps be using site targeted ads so they'll then know exactly how many views and clicks they're getting

interesting. I guess those companies will have to move with the times or keep losing market share.

Umm.. there is a big difference between penis enlargement and dating. As long as they are not adult, dating sites are very mainstream sites.
