The era they were recording, they were ahead of the curve.
A crazy amount of material for a band that was only together 7 years.
But they did record some crap aswell.

They were top of the pile in a time that produced more great bands and musicians than the 40 years since.

You are still talking about them 45 years after they broke up.

Paul Macartney still plays to bigger audiences than 99% of the bands today. Or is it 100%?

So I think rather than being over rated you just don't like them.

I'm picky about their music. All I have to say is - try their 'Revolver' Album, and if that has nothing for you, then you've probably sampled agood enough cross section of their music.

they were high on acid. That's for sure. But they made a revolution within music. I'm not a big fan of all of their songs, but they have songs that will never ever die.

How many of you were even alive during that era? Yeah, thought so.

Like them, don't like them, whatever.... but calling them overrated 40 years after the fact is, well, it sounds very idiotic to someone who had their ear to the radio back when much of their songs first hit the airwaves.

Overrated... christ they were larger than life.

And still are.

Granted that i am only 28, but my knowledge of music is amazing and my collection of music is over 7000 cds, i am very passionate about music, music is a big part of my life and i love all types of music, i have a very wide range of music, but to me the Beatels do not mean much to me, i am a huge fan of many bands even before the beatels time.

Batts, you weren't around yet. The day The Beetles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1963 they unleashed a revolutionary wave among the young kids. The 50's era of conservative fashion styles, short haircuts, etc. all got the boot and the baby boomer generation was unleashed into long hair and many other radical changes.

The Beetles went beyond just a music phenomena and literally ushered in much more modern ways of thinking.

There's your trouble right there. Anyone can have a large music collection, and everyone has certain tastes in music they like. But not everyone has the capicity to appreciate the impact certain artists had on the world.

I'm not the greatest Beatles fan, I never bought their albums actually. None of their songs were ever "my all time favorite" or anything.... but I can certainly tell you about what a huge huge impact they made, and just how many bands and solo artists they have inspired over the decades.

You can listen to tunes all you want, but you either have the sense of appreciating the history of rock or you don't. I wasn't around in the 50's and am not an owner of a lot of 50's albums, but I can certainly imagine the incredible impact some of those tunes had.

Appreciate man. Use your imagination. Talk to people who were there.... get a feel of what it was like for kids at school in the weeks following the release of some of the Beatles albums, not to mention the day they first landed in N. America.

Then you might know.

Having a knowledge of music has nothing to do with first hand experience..

Yes there were other bands at the time, but the Beatles changed the music world which resulted in a totally different attitude of music.. They started a trend that resulted in groups like Canned Heat, Vanilla Fudge, and tons more..

True.. Had they started up today, they would just be another group.. but if they hadn't come out when they did, music today could have been altogether different.. We'll never know..

I believe that you are passionate about music and that it is a big part of your life, but I doubt your claims of appreciation and knowledge of music.

The fact that you are a "huge fan of many bands even before the beatles time," is what gives you away.

...which really has nothing to do with your thread title.

I wasn't a big fan either, particularly through their first 2 (UK) albums. There earliest own-material was as unexciting as music aimed at the Top 20 almost always is. When it came to updated recordings of old R&B songs, bands like the Stones, the Pretty Things and Manfred Mann did that stuff much better.

But calling them over-rated betrays a woeful lack of knowledge of the music industry back then, which had us listening to tired clones (from both sides of the Atlantic) of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochrane and others from the mid/late-fifties. There wasn't a single record I enjoyed enough to want to buy, until the bands came along that were let in through the gates that The Beatles opened.

Paul McCartney once said something about how "Yesterday" being their most popular song put their music in perspective. But whether you put their influence down to their music, clever marketing (by Brian Epstein), or lucky timing, how can the band which began a whole new era of pop/rock be "over-rated"?

It's simply foolish to knock any music which so many people, from kids to grandparents, are still enjoying 40-years on and counting. Only a tiny handful of the recording industry's output acheives anything close to that kind of longevity. And it is surely a better indicator of which tracks are in some way special, than any individual's personal taste.

Whether you look at album sales, chart topping hits, the writing and musicianship of the band members (they wrote and played their music - Lennon and McCartney went on to have success Post-Beatles), their experimentation and styles of music, the bands that they inspired and influenced (ex. Nirvana), it's easy to see why they're hailed as one of the best.

What greatest hits did you get, Blue/Red album? or 1?

You are unfamiliar with them, thus I'm presuming you purchased 1 - as it's the "discount's bin" introduction to the Beatles. Of which basically spans just their #1 singles, and "quality" of music cannot be quantified by sales, thus this is not truly a "greatest hits" album, but merely a "commercial primer" to introduce you to what is, the greatest band.

It really doesn't do their catalogue justice.

The beatles were an "album" band. You got the substance, the depth, by listening to their albums in full. Be it Rubber Soul, Revolver, etc. Even the early albums grow on you, and their enthusiasm/energy wins you over.

Abbey Road side II medley > Music

IMO, that is the pinnacle of melodic noise-vibrations.

You gotta put things into perspective ... with the time. Most of the old music you're gonna listen too will suck (except a couple good hits), but it was creative and new back then.

there are many many songs besides their greatest hits that are good. i don't even like some of their 'greatest hits' like i wanna hold your hand and the early crap like that but there are some real jems and i never get bored of listening to them for whatever reason. everything from rubber soul and beyond is pretty good.

Batts,

in perspective the Beatles were a cultural phenomena like Madonna is/was today. I don't really care for any of Madonna's music and yet I can't deny that she held great influence with a generation. What you might not realize is that before the Beatles there were really no 'bands' it was a front person or leader and a back up musicians in most cases and they usually didn't write their own material . . . No 'groups' of that period shared the creative and performance duties that the Beatles did and not many groups do even today . . I was also told that the Beatles were the first band to write to the minor 6th cord unlike the previous music of either 1-4-5 or 1-6-2-5, and get this . . The Beatles were tuned down with a record deal by Decca because the record executive said guitar music was dead . . Made the guy very famous in the industry . .

Not many 60's bands are even discussed today . . .

Another band that was very influential is Black Sabbath . . . whether you like the Black Sabbath or not, they changed the way music sounds today, just like the 'heaviest band of all time, Led Zeppelin' was 50% acoustic . . . Led Zeppelin had records go gold and platinum with no AM radio play at all BTW . . . Totally unheard of at the time . . .

You also have to realize that the music back then was not marketed like today's music . . . 1 song and then a TV show, film deal and clothing line just didn't happen . . . You couldn't even buy Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath records at the store . . We had to go to 'head shops' to find them, if we could . . . . The fist 'rock' FM station in LA wasn't until the late 60's and these bands were selling gold with hardly any air play at all .

This is sooo true! Old stuff always sucks! You just gotta remember that people back then were idiots and liked that garbage because it was creative and new to them back then.

We are so lucky that we don't live back then!

1. You're quoting a dude who's probably in his early twenties.
2. Today's music mostly sucks.
3. "People back then" have experience. "People now" don't.
4. I'm only 30, and realize 1,2 and 3.

Everyone's musical tastes are different but there's no doubt that the Beatles changed the face of popular music. It's amazing how well their music holds up today.

Nobody will ever achieve what Lennon/McCartney did. 100 years from now they will be looked at as we look at Beethoven now. They were truly musical geniuses.

Now if you want to talk about overrated, Elvis was fucking overrated.

We are so lucky that we don't live back then!

TODAY'S MUSIC is where it's at . . . pure genius!

Now thats funny. How many musicians today can actually play an instrument? Music today has replaced the Zeppelins, Fleetwood Macs, Pink Floyds with Eminem.

Yep, much better now.

Also people forget the Beatles stop touring in 1966 and still had hit after hit.Go get Sgt Pepper and listen to it with a set of headphones, that was done on four tracks, all the insturments you hear were played live.
Go to their early albums with all the harmonizing, those were done on a two track, live in the studio .That means singing and playing at the same time.
What made Elvis great was he was the first white man to sell black music to a white audience no one had done that before him and to be very sexual in his moves. ED Sullivan only showed him from the waist up.What makes Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath so incredible, people don't understand there was nothing like their music before them it was totally new. These people were pioneers.

The Beatles broke ground in music. Many of their songs are still top rate, even after 40 years. Much of their work has been addapted to classical and easy listening versions.

No other band even comes close. The Rolling Stones? What a joke!!

The Beatles are unquestionably the greatest rock and roll band that ever lived.

The reason why younger people today think the Beatles suck is because by today's standards, music can only be good if it's somehow 'hard'. In other words, the "singer" has to be from the hood, sing about killing or sex, or the guitars have to be loud and distorted with a kid screaming into a mic pretending to be rebelious when he's actually a upper middle class surburnite. It's pathetic, there's no freedom or individuality in music anymore.
Good music needs no posturing or phony attitudes.

yep Madonna changes a lot of stuff for the younger cultures and she's still very important and some areas to some people . . Her song about abortion was revolutionary at the time. She set fashion trends etc . . And invented 'metrosexuls'

The Beatles rewrote the book of how its done and you cannot escape their influence in any form of music no matter what it is.

Love them or not, Their importance and influence on modern culture cannot be over estimated.

According to the research I did two years back, boyband history originated from them.
