if you're in canada I highly recommend questrade.com....most every other broker in this country is overpriced, slow on fills and just plain shitty especially for day trading.

Make sure you get a direct access broker.....interactivebrokers.ca and disnatdirect.com are the only other two that I know in canada that i read good things about but I use questrade so that's what i would recommend

hope it helps.

If you are new, which you are, you should open an account somewhere with a low minimum opening balance such as scottrade.com you only need $500 to open an account there.

Regards,

Lee

It's usually around $10 per trade, no matter how many shares you buy... $10 to buy, then later on when you want to sell, $10 to sell....

Interesting thread - I've been thinking about this for a while, ofcourse you could use financial trade people, but I want to do it myself. It's hard to figure out where to begin though.

Ameritrade - as long as you don't trade on margin.

Scottrade if you need a margin account.

Use www.choicetrade.com you can always get a live person on the phone un like many of the bigger brokers. Also no min amount to open an account.

Top it off with trades only cost $5 no other hidden fees. Then just use E-Trax for the real time L2's http://www.alphatrade.com/products.php

Basicly, the stock market is a big auction. A "Level 1 quote" on Nasdaq stocks shows you two prices: the most anyone's willing to pay right now (called the bid price) and the least anyone's willing to sell for right now (called the ask or offer price). A "Level 2 quote" will also show you everyone who's got an open buy or sell order at the moment and at what price. It shows the highest bidder, then next highest, then next highest, etc. And it shows the lowest seller, then next lowest, etc.

It is NOT something a beginner needs. If you want to know more, there's a book about using an online broker at lulu.com/content/150253 - yes I know the author.

Not to be an ass, but if you have to ask, it's probably not a good idea to get into it.

Some major news ie. earnings reports come after hours. NASDAQ for example can be traded for a few hours immediately after regular trading hours.

Educate yourself before opening a brokerage account. There truly is a lot to learn.
