This differs by market. Check out some of the stats on salary.com, among others. Someone with the same skill-set in South Carolina might make half as much as his counterpart in New York.

Average salary without a qualifier such as state -- better yet, city -- is meaningless.

$3,200? In what 3rd world country?

I can make that with a deskjob punching numbers into a computer here in Boston. And thats without using my worthless bachelors.

Dunno about server admins, but for programmers straight out of college, 35-40k/year, 50-60k for rather advanced guy and then it just goes up depending on experience. Around 70k/year should get you a pretty good senior programmer that can do frameworks and coordinate outsourced workers.

Edit: that's in my area, converted into USD.. it varies depending where you are

"Third world crap" can be just as good as "first world crap" - if not better in some instances.

IT grads with some experience in Costa Rica earn around $10K/year - a salary for experienced programmers around $15K/year but can go as high as ya like if it's someone highly valued.

CR is exporting fair amounts of software annually and this is obviously increasing - it's nicer to program shit here than in some other places.

University graduate from an Ivy league, computer programmer, I would say about $80 - $90 thousand annually.
