I can understand them, probably because a lot of them come to BC all the time for visiting, work, etc. I don't trust them though, they're too kind. I always feel that they are up to something.Comment

I unconsiously make the effort when I'm overseas to speak in a very proper english accent.
Seriously, it depends what part of Australia you're from, and how you were brought up, just like anywhere else.
The cultured Manchanian accent is easy to understand, for example, but good fucking luck trying to understand the scallies.Comment

Ive never a a problem with anyone understanding my pronunciation when I talk...
but of course aussies have their whole own brand of language and a lot of the words we use .. well their meaning are not understood by other english speaking countries but you get that with any colloquialisms in any language anyway.
southerners and especially tasmanians have hints of brittish accents and tend to speak "proper" eblgish as opposed to the northerners who sound liek steve irwin and say words incorrectly such as "NothinK"(instead of 'nothing') and "anythinK"
..... also the way to pick a canadian accent is they talk thru their noses more than yanks, are a bit more whiny... yanks tend to talk in the back of their throats and of course the more southern there is more drawl.
East coast speak twice as fast as west cost. (university research showed that new yorkers hear in 60 minutes of new what would take over 90 minutes to read in LA)Comment

I just tune my ear to the flow of the language. After a couple of minutes, my ears are adjusted to understand how the accents affect their speech and everything works fine.
My problem is that I start to talk with my own version of their accent when speaking to them -- a sympathetic accent. Kinda like how Madonna talks these days with a British accent.Comment

City residents in Texas aren't so tough; but get with a real cowboy? Dayum.Originally posted by EdgeXXXLOL Really?
I never really realized that our accent is hard to understand
Worst accent I ever had decipering was a guy in Macon, Georgia. Didn't understand a word he said. Ever. And, no help with the tobacco in his mouth. Seems the deeper the South, the thicker the accent. No wonder there's so much inbreeding ....(don't jump on me, Peaches -- I lived amongst the Jerry Springer crowd for way too long) LOLRaven

That's odd. I have never had a hard time understanding any of the dialects in English (granted English IS my first language). I can understand Aussies, Scots, Irish, Brits, South Africans, etc. and all regional US accents just fine.

Damn, fucked if I even had a chance to try.
When I was there, seemed like every hottie working behind the counter of a fastfood joint or a souvenir shop thought I was a movie star. They's just look up at me, saucer-eyed, and I coulda talked about the price of puke, for all they cared --

lets analyze poll stats:
Yes, np here 28 70.00%
Sometimes I have a hard time 8 20.00%
Nope, I don't understand them most of the times 4 10.00%
at least 15 of yes np votes came from aussies itself
so we have 40 total votes. Valid ones 25
therefore 48% of people have problem to understand aussies
flame away now
