    Current Day Paysite Startup Budget

Ok, so it's been a few years since I've even thought about it, and only recently kicked it around as someone offline was asking my advice on the matter.

Would this be a in the 'close' proximity for a decent layout of a standard/semi nichey paysite these days?

    10k content
    5k+ design of site/affiliate admin/fhgs/banners/hpas
    3-5k custom coded affiliate software
750 x2? for epoch/ccbill yada yada processing fees
30-40k for initial promo, some PPC, , spots on industry/resource boards, etc...

    ballpark around 50-60k ish?

Sound right or am I way low, close or high?

Thanks in advance for the current update

Yeh I was iffy-ing on that range too...I figure it depends on HOW custom, and HOW nichey it was...if there was a stock of ready plugins and licensable stuff already on the market that would suffice, etc...for a straight up fresh shooting of all content I know that would be WAY low, would have to x5 it to come close to a 100% original content thing...

if you have content good enough, you can scratch off that last 30-40k

like "onehunglo" for example. his content was good enough to where he didnt have to spend a dime to make a fortune. (didnt have to, but he did anyway).

his content/site sold itself, so affiliates like myself were sending $15,000.00 per week in sales.

there are a couple other spots i could save 5-10k there, but im a designer, not sure where you stand along these lines.

Just dont think you can buy any old content and make a shitload of cash, those days are gone for most people. Content is key.

Assuming you're talking about exclusive, I would say at least $20-30k worth of content already in the site and another $5-10k worth on the way for updates. I would cut out some of the marketing cost for a start-up, you should already have some traffic or traffic methods available or affiliates lined up. For example, I could start a paysite in a few different niches tomorrow and I already have affiliates lined up for it.

I would say something like 50k is a ballpark figure.

Absolutely man, you are totally on the mark...I figure any program these days is going to be marked for success by their ability to have dozens of medium & big fish on their contact list ready to push for you...that type of thing is often overlooked by the n00b or the VC type...

Reminds me of Ant's reply to a topic the other night "...and having connections that can do any-mother-fucking thing..." or something along that sentiment

Thanks for the reminder on the update pool of content costs...that has to bump up the cost a bit for sure

My ideas (granted I'm not a paysite owner so take what I say with a grain of salt...):

Spend more on content, for that price you won't get much exclusive content
Buy NATS or MPA3, don't get something custom coded until you have more cashflow
Keep your promotion costs down, you want to test a lot in the beginning and do your own marketing until you nail the formula for success.

So in summary, spend more on content, less on marketing in the beginning until you get yourself a profitable model, then expand.

its like a good restaurant. if the food's good enough, it will be successful. w/out the excellent food, you will fizzle away like most of the competition.

You can start higher and you can start lower! When I started my site, I didn't have that much money, but I built it up over time!!
