Be glad you didn't see this magnificent horse, seconds out of the gate, fracture his right rear leg, above and below the ankle.

It's tragic...he will, most likely, never race again..and it's life threatening....very sad day for horse fans.

I'm sure he'll live out the rest of his days banging fine young maires for large sums and eating all the hay and oats he wants. Doesn't sound half bad

No. It doesn't happen during the race. There have been times when a horse is scratched prior to getting to the gate due to injury or illness. Rarely, does it happen after they start running.

A compound fracture on a horse's leg, any leg, is not only serious, but life threatening. Usually, they are put down, even if surgery is attempted.
