Saw Walk The Line and Capote today

Walk The Line was the most enjoyable of the Oscar films I have seen. It was written to the standard bio pic forumla - in many ways it was a country music version of 'Ray' - but the acting in it really makes it stand out. They really pull off the singing and I wanted to put on some Johnny Cash as soon as I left. Reese will win best actress and it will be justified. The best actor grouping is such a hard one this year but if it went to Joaquin Phoenix I wouldn't be upset.

On the other hand, Hoffman was excellent in Capote. I wasn't sure if I was going to like Capote since I didn' know much of his work (other than Breakfast at Tiffanys which most women know) and I hadn't read In Cold Blood. However, it turns out I didn't really need to have that background knowledge though I am sure those who did have it got a bit extra out of it. It was interesting seeing Harper Lee portrayed since To Kill A Mockingbird is just one of the best books ever written in my eyes and I don't think I had actually ever seen her portrayed before. Anyway, the film was good and the performance by Hoffman was excellent. He didn't have to sing and pass off as an extremly well known singing voice but I guess he did need to pull of the unique speaking voice. Tough call this year on best actor but it should be between the two of them.

Walk The Line should have been in the list for best picture. If Ray deserved to be nominated than so does Walk The Line plus the acting is better.

Walk the Line played on the way back from Costa Rica, I liked it and it made the flight go by pretty quickly.

I saw walk the line yesterday. Although im not a huge fan of the typical hollywood political correct oscar nominee movies this flick certainly was very nice to watch. Personally i rather wouldve seen a low budget, unknown director make a similar movie but rougher, not worrying about potential prizes though.

Well, it was based on books that Cash and Carter wrote and they were on set, etc so it was going to have a gloss on it. I am sure there a totally different grittier story there that will be told at somepoint.

I wasn't really expecting that acting from Joaquin Phoenix. Very impressive. I enjoyed not just the music but the acting itself.

I saw Walk the Line as well. I really dug the movie and Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix' acting was superb. I do have an interesting question though....

I've always appreciated Johnny Cash's music but the the movie seemed to have fallen into the familiar trap (formula?) of tortured artist = good artist. I know that we're living in the post-Sartre period of the postmodern antihero but isn't the notion of the "suffering artist" getting old? Is there any other acceptable definition for "DEPTH" other than "angst" and "personal suffering"? Would a HAPPY version of Sylvia Plath sell?

It was her voice and I started a rather heated debate in the pub afterwards by suggesting she had a better voice than June Carter.

I saw the film recently, during a long flight.

While impressed by the *thorough* and certainly convincing performance given by Phoenix, it was Witherspoon who left me thinking about her... long after I had reached my destination.

Compared to Johnny Cash, June Carter is unknown to us -- we *consumed* the story in the film so hungrily for wanting to *know* what role the WOMAN had played in the making of this Man in Black.

The actress seemed to know this, too.

She FILLED up the character with things we could not have provided for ourselves, for not knowing all that much about Her.

For me, the best part was Her ad-libbing. That was simply brilliant -
