The scariest thing right now is Africa. There is very little governmental control there, and a big outbreak would both be economically devastating, as well as extremely dangerous.

Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)
Avian influenza in birds

Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.

Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated secretions or excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry, or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.

Well the US Government, State Governments, and County Governments are now preparing some very intensive plans when bird flu comes here.

Front page article in the local news here said the county is estimating 1/3rd of the population could contract the flu and 1/3rd of those folks will die from it. So they are estimating a 10% loss of the population base.

What's even more frightening though are the battle plans being prepared. This involves the use of the US Military and National Guard to completely quarantine areas in the US that get bird flu. All shopping malls, schools, parks, universities, stadiums, big companies and places where large amounts of people come in contact with each other will be shut down. Roads will be blocked to prevent anyone from leaving the county. People will be ordered not to shake hands with anyone else and to stay 6 feet away from other people. Some people will be quarantined to their houses once hospitals fill up and will not be allowed to leave their properties.

So basically if you live in an area that gets hit, you're going to be living in a total police state situation for about 2 to 3 months.

Clueless of the ramifications of birds having the bird flu or are you just assuming it's going to spread to people unlike the other 1000 that didn't?

They found bird flu just few kilometers from where I live, and I could not care less.
This has been going on for decades and the only reason we are aware of it now is because dead animals have been tested. Weak people and animals die of flu, nothing new in that.

I'm more concerned about the over-reactions by the government and people more than the flu itself.

They've got some fucked up intrusive plans for immediate containment when this shit hits the US.

Who the hell wants to live in a quarantined city with everything shut down for several months?

Who wants to be quarantined with all the sick people?

So are you talking about a human pandemic or if the damn bird flu (one that kills birds) hits the US?

I'm talking about the fucked up over-reaction by the governments and the people that will create economic chaos for businesses and people because of the bird flu coming here.

Look how messed up they handled Katrina. It'll be just like that all over the US if this thing gets out of control and the media plays it up like you know they'll do. It'll create a total fuck up situation as always.

This has been going on for decades and the only reason we are aware of it now is because dead animals have been tested. Weak people and animals die of flu, nothing new in that.
This is not about "the flu", since there is actually no such single thing - genetic mutations cause the emergence of ever new strains, with each kind being different in its effects, potential for transmission, etc.

A danger of the bird flu, or more specifically, the H5N1 strain, is that because it is a kind relatively "new" to humans, we have very little defences against it. Each time a mammal is infected, there is a small chance that the virus may mutate or reassort with other "common" flu viruses in a way which causes the possibility of easy human to human transmission. If that happens, it may cause a huge death toll.

Your assertion that the flu kills "weak people and animals" is incorrect in this context. While that goes for common human strains of the flu, the Spanish Flu of 1918 was most deadly for healthy, young people. People aged 15-35. And guess what? It is now believed that the Spanish Flu originated from birds, while current research into the bird flu we see now suggests that it is evolving along a similar path as the Spanish Flu.

Now, what damage would a pandemic do? Let's look at the Spanish Flu: it infected a fifth to a third of world population, and killed 1-5% of total world population, or, more specifically, somewhere between 20 million and 100 million people worldwide. Perhaps more people than died in WWII.

World population has more than tripled since then, and the bird flu has much higher mortality rates for those infected than the Spanish Flu had. In a worst case scenario, a strain capable of rapid human to human transmissions could kill hundreds of millions of people worldwide, the equivalent of a large scale nuclear war.

While it is not at all unlikely that none of this ever comes to pass, it is a very real and very large danger. Even if chances of it happening were very slim, it would still be something worth taking seriously.

There is an extremely damn good reason for the press hype and the Administration pushing all of the fear out to the public - its the medicine that would be used to fight it

Right now Tamiflu (you always see little bottles of it on the TV shows about bird flu) is the only patented drug that will have any effect on bird flu (and even that is very minor)

Its produced by a company called Roche under marketing rights from the discovering/patent holder company Gilead Sciences Inc located in California.

Guess who the Chairman of the board of Gilead was until he became the Secretary of Defense - thats right Donald H. Rumsfeld - who is still its major stockholder with millions worth (around $18mill or so) of their stock.

Interesting that Bush recently suggested that the US buy $2 Billion worth of the drug - although most medical journals say it wont do much for a real outbreak (if there ever really is one in humans - so far one mammal has been affected by the bad strain)

Kinda reminiscent of Rumsfelds best friend Cheney who is making billions in residuals from his company that he left to become Vice President (Halliburton - the rebuilders of Iraq)

If you need links just google tamiflu rumsfeld - or if you are a hater - go for it - just the facts - no opinions here
