No, you can slap goatse on it and people will come. A few will come back, most won't (actually, for goatse, that might be different, but you get the point).

Real estate is valuable, but it does not guarantee success. You can have a store in the hottest spot of the world, but if you don't market the store well, sales will suffer.

A good marketing strategy around sex.com, branding it as "the only address you need" or something like that, could turn it into the very core of online adult. It could quite easily become the Yahoo of porn, especially if you throw in some enticements like regularly updated free galleries (only softcore/censored, of course), free promo vids for new sites (again, censored/softcore), etc.
Profit might suffer in the short term because it would focus on creating value for the customer rather than immediately milking the customer, but in the long term it would become a actual active hub of internet traffic, rather than a mere source of it. Focusing on Customer Lifetime Value rather than immediate profits is essential to actually building something up :2 cents:

So true... Too many 'design critics' think a good site is supposed to be some breath-taking piece of art...

Surfers like basic and to the point... The Hun and Persian Kitty both show that ya don't fix what ain't broke...

I predict Sex.com will be a major force and in 1 year from now people will be licking their ass.

Good start so far, I see major potential.

Here we go again! Non adult owners of a premium adult domain. Now, I like Gary just fine, but I don't believe he had an optimal gameplan for the domain when he owned it and in looking at the new site (as it is now), the new guys aren't showing any real "moxy" either.

2 things you said in your post that stand out to me are:
  • The money they're going to spend is immense
  • They are in it for the long haul

The money they're going to spend? How bout the money they've already spent??

It's been 6 weeks since they purchased the domain (you said) and they should have had things in development before the contracts were even signed so that as soon as the ink dried and the check cleared - you could start implementing - rather that start planning implementation. Hell, in 6 weeks just as a banner farm they could have already generated substatial revenue while the new site was being finished.

The second part of your post is the most interesting (and concerning) to me however and I'm basing what I'm saying on what I'm seeing because I don't know what you're planning - but it isn't logical to put up that new site as it is if that wasn't the direction you were planning on going in.

When I hear people use the phrase "long haul" it scares me. To me that implies "i'm going to spend your money (and lots of it) now, but you're not going to make any revenue for a long time - and that usually implies that the person running the show doesn't know HOW to make money in the short term". Ostentatious comments like you mentioned "Howard's gonna start promoting the site" even more greatly lean me toward that belief - as if Howard's going to be a money generating savior for all the $'s that's been spent so far. Maybe Howard can get some folks to the front door - but he can't make em spend money.

That takes me to the design of the site itself. Generally, the front door should serve one of 2 purposes.
  • Send them off to somewhere else and make revenue in the process
  • Entice the surfer deeper into your site and ultimately - to spend money on the site

Rarely should a front page need to do both.

Uggh.. I was going to make a long drawn out post but it's not my site and I'm not consulting for the owners.. so I'll wish you well and hope that the guys who spent the money have enough money left over to hire someone who not only knows the right answers - but knows why the right answers are the right answers :)

That one little line is as close to the 'meaning of success' as one can get..

Let me get right to the point...I am just a dumb schmuck sales guy and its not my decision on how they do anything with the site...my job is to only sell adds and make sure they the owners are happy with the monies i am bringing in and you the add buyers are happy with the traffic you are getting...

As far as all you people with opinions--its great that you speak your mind but the only part that should matter to any of you is if your spending money advertsing on sex.com that you are getting your monies worth..

my post ----i am just trying to do a service to all webmasters to see the new sex.com..

as far as any of your opinions type away--be my guest---everyone thinks they all have the answers--

and also remember---opinions are like assholes and we all have one

defresto 03-02-2006 07:52 PM

Did you get my email? From defresto [at] gmail.com

Hey Howard - I meant to edit my post because I used alot of "you" in my post and what I meant to imply is "they". I would surmise that you're only selling ad space and not the puppet master who's formulating the master plan - didn't want it to come across as an insult to you personally :)

You're right about the opinions/assholes comment too - but I've been doing this a very long time - and people pay me more than :2 cents: for mine :)

I remember when sex.com was a real moneymaking proposition. :2 cents:
