A Tough Choice For Lensman

lensman is in a difficult position now - if he allows headless to return then he basically castrates his moderator who will not be taken seriously anymore - if he holds the ban - then they must enforce it for everyone who does pretty much the same as headless / alienq. I agree with ronaldo that we need to remove the surfers and kids first rather than ban industry people. Send TD in to clear up multiple nicks and non verified surfers who have nothing worthwhile to say and maybe underage kids looking for free boobie pic's.

My feeling is compromise when it comes to this ban - give Headless / alienq a week ban as punishment informing anyone who does the same it will not be tolerated - but not a lifetime ban. Agree to disagree with these guys - but remember they helped build this board and continued to do so

lots of people get banned and then comeback

TD enforced the rules he was given....he just goes to far when he changes my sig ;)

if lensman decides to let someone back...it shouldnt reflect poorly on TD

I have to disagree with that. It will undermine him entirely.

The worst thing a boss can do to an employee is question their judgement in front of other people. Question them privately, berate them privately, disagree with them privately and tell them they're wrong...PRIVATELY. But publicly he MUST side with TexasDreams or what will happen next time ANYONE questions his judgement?

"I'm gonna tell Lensman on you."

And imagine the wisecracks for a guy with a tough job already. He could get gunshy about his job and wouldn't be able to perform the job to the best of his ability out of fear of being humiliated publicly.

Had he apologized on his own before Lensman told him to do so (total speculation on that), people could write him off as a hothead, but also know that he had the full backing of his employer. So, little harm done. But it has escalated too far. If he apologizes publicly, no matter what Lensman says publicly and whether it's true or not, everyone will assume Lensman made him do it.

Having been in a management position where my superior constantly backpeddled on my decisions, I can tell you the respect you're given by staff dwindles away to nothing very quickly. And while this isn't exactly the same situtation, the same rule of thumb applies, nobody would respect TD's authority. I agree with you fully.

Come on, no-one is going to clean up the fake nicks or stop the Juicy's of this world from breaking the rules. Sure all that stuff is childish crap which a lot of visitors would like to see the back of, but it's what makes GFY what it is and regardless of what that says about our industry, it works. Would you really "fix" GFY if it were yours?

As for the recent bannings, the guys were playing close to the edge, presumably because whether they got banned or not, they would look cool to their audience. Anyway the bannings are probably just a way to generate some extra posts and the nicks will be back in a few days. Big deal either way...

that was my point at the beginning - in order to make the choices between what is right and wrong vs. making choices that brings in cash. There is a point I will go to before I simply can't think with greed. Most who have boards today are very concerned about how webmasters think of the board - but they simply do not have the hits nor demand the $$ required that GFY does. The board has turned into it's own breathing monster that will not die no matter how terrible things go here. People like Headless etc. who have strong opinions and personalities is what keeps it alive. GFY is a necessary evil

It's simple for Lensman to work this out. He put faith in his employess to do their job the best they can. TD is obviously trying to live up to that expectation.

The only thing I would expect Lensman to do is maybe suggest to TD that it was a little harsh and have him make the final decision as to whether headless and Alien are let back.

agreed - that is why I suggested a one week ban so everyone can save face. TD's authority is not in question as Lensman supports him and with the one week ban it also shows the rest on gfy that TD is taking seriously the rules that were laid out. You can't tell a child that if they hit the car a punishment will follow - then once they do you never enact that punishment. Make good on threats and there will be respect for the board - overkill it and you will have anarchy

Actually, GFY is at a bit of a crossroads right now in many respects: Tons of useless sigwhores, surfers, misleading threads, and of course, issues like GUBA.

It is very close to becoming a surfer oriented board rather than a business board, and that would not be the best thing.
