SEO: css font weight = html <b> ?

Hey all, I have been wondering if setting the font weight by use of CSS would appear the same to a search engine as bold tags via HTML?

Thanks In Advance,
c-lo

interesting question!...

Personally I use the emphasis tag (em)....

If you decide to set your em tag in your CSS (i.e. you decide to make it itallic and a specific color etc..) I really doubt it affects how SEs see it...I think they are looking for the tag itself...

I would say yes... I used... font:bold 9pt verdana; depending on application.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the input.

Still deciding if I want to switch all my tags to emphasis tags, or take a chance and keep it the way it is...

Thanks,
c-lo

You only live once, so change it. I've been using css for everything and i haven't seen any changes with any of the engines..even when i make big changes in the style sheets. I'm in the middle of doing a pure css design without html (or very little) or tables, etc. So i'm really curious to see the engines reaction to it. But i wouldn't think it matters if the engines see some content bold'ed (by html), em, font-weight, etc. It's certainly an interesting question worthly of some research. I would like to know this as well.

As per my experience, anything ive done in pure CSS has done better than html counterparts - but its not anything drastic.

if the CSS stylesheet is called from an external link, the SEs will not see any of your CSS tags on the main page ... if you want to go one step better, include your CSS stylesheet in the robots.txt

... cause that's a great way of getting your site banned if the SE spider finds out...
