Okay, I grew up on Alfred Hitchcock. He knew how to scare the fuck out of people. The mere mentioning of his name would get people ready to kick your ass.

I haven't seen any of the new horror movies but do they hold up to the classics?

not at all IMHO

i mean to say the new ones may be more graphic yadda yadda but thats simply die to the desensitization of the general population

era for era - the oldies are much scarier and the suspense is better

they generally have better character development the new ones are usually the same old "bunch of college students get killed" mish mash
and a lot of it revolvces around supernatural or superhuman like villains

i think thats what made hitchcocks films so scary he would introduce what appear to be everyday normal people of creatures and then slowly unfold how dark and scary those that on the first appearance seem normal - can really be

The difference between hitchcock and the rest he knew how to keep people in suspense. Some good recent ones check out #1 house of 1000 corpses, Darkness, The Grudge, Jeeper Creepers, Saw 1,2
All the remakes suck in my opinion.

Really good modern horror movies seem to be far and few between these days IMO. They're out there, but there's long periods of time between what I'd consider to be really good ones.

The Exorcist comes to mind as a genuine horror flick. Perhaps The Ring. The first Amityville Horror was well done.

But I agree a lot tend to be campy schlock slasher fests with a bunch of dumbass college punks meeting grisly fates.

I think most directors have no sense of building suspense with the audience, or how to effectively make use of the viewer's own imagination (something Hitchcock was a genius at).

Tough question. I think in many ways we tend to prefer the horror movies of our youth. Why? As children and teens (of a latter, more innocent generation) we're more susceptible to the scares. In your case, Greg B, you probably love the classics like Psycho, The Birds, The Thing, It Came From Outer Space, and so on. In my case, Freddy Kruger gave me the scares, along with Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees, the Evil Dead, and all manner of other 70s monsters, psychos, and aliens.

So I think a lot of it depends on which movies we watched as children.

Another reason that we may tend to prefer movies of our generation is due to cultural relevancy. Throughout the history of horror movies, we notice that they delve into cultural fears at the time of filming. This is why we see atomic monsters of the 50s (fear of atomic bombs) and serial killers in the 70s (fear of charlie manson and other notables).

So the average person will tend to prefer films associated with his own generation.

Me, personally, I love horror movies of every era, the good, the bad, and the bizarre.

completely different types of films. new horror films are more suspense, shock and gore, with not much substance. a way to kill a couple of hours

hitchcock is the opposite - lots of story, little gore. actually, I wouldn't really call it horror, maybe psychological thrillers

now, hammer house of horror - that's a completely different story...

keeping my reply short for now.... old is better because it was first, there can only be so many slashers hacking up people before it is impossible to make a new vorhees freddy michael meyers type thus they make 12 chapters of them which works out cause you feel like you know the killer and usually root for them to fuck people up like it was a prize fight...if they tried to come out with some new character of this type you would just look at and call it a ripoff of one of the top slasher dogs....thus the realm is tapped out unless someone comes up with something off keel like candyman, was the first name that popped into my head: agreed not the best ref it is what i give for now

then you go to the mortal killer movies, scream...alot of movies of this type pop out all the time but usually without the quality that somehow packs..american psycho along the same kinda lines, agreed not a slasher like scream it uses alot of the off the wall twist action shits good photography lighting and story:both different but the same in many ways....these type movies would in my opinion be decendants of hitchcock who could not really use graphic depictions of death the way we do these days, but the setups and suspense buildups are often alike so if he were alive these days i would say these would be close to his style........one that im sure he would have freaking loved is 7...

im outta time for now so i leave it there those are not all the styles obviously but what i could come up with freestyle in 4 minutes like i said i will pull out the microscope in this thread in bout 2hrs

Well, Hitchcock knew story and suspense and characters so solidly that they still hold up to this day.

The early slasher movies like Halloween were very, very good. Friday the 13th, the original Carrie.

Carpenter's 'The Thing' was awesome and still is! Lots of suspense and great shocking terror and great cast.

The third wave of horror spanning late 70's to mid 80's had 'Aliens' which scared the bejeezus out of people. Not gorey but suspense and a great monster. Best monster since the 1930's.

Problem with Hollywood is originality isn't nurtured. So when something original does make it through and makes a fortune, the less talented pile through to copy to make a buck.

Ghoulish body hacking and slashing ain't horror. Keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, clutching each other in fear and jumping at the slightest noise is the keystroke of a master storyteller and fine cast and crew.

Each generation of the 20th Century had it's master horror movies. One of the oldest 'Nosferatu' is still creepier than shit.

What we need is a new monster. We haven't had a decent new monster since the Alien. At least the 70s and 80s gave us Jason and Freddie. After that it's just not happenin.

Classics will be classic. There's something on these old horror films that can't be compared with the new ones.

A Nightmare on the Elm Street and The Exorcist's 1974 release are two of my favorite classic films.

Some of the older ones are scary as fuck...and some of the newer ones are scary as fuck. There are good ones and bad ones in both the old and the new movies. If it scares the fuck outta me then I enjoy it whether it's Hitchcock or one of the newer movies.
I think most are running out of ideas and therefore end up being just another teenage slasher movie which sucks.
And Freddy vs Jason was just rediculous.

Its a different time. the old ones are not so good. Back then, they were off the hook. The new ones suck cause they try to hard and its hard coming up with a new scary plot or idea. So many horror plots have been created.

The first horror movie to come out without all the crazy special effects and where its written about something totally unique ... well that movie might have a chance.

Personally .... I loved Creep Show. Used to scare the crap out of me.
