I know a couple of real respected program reps/managers that use fake nicks to bash the competition and flame the other big guys just so they don't look bad doing it with their real names

fake nicks are good for business. companies essentially do this, its called stealth marketing when they make fake nics and give a new movie/product rave reviews in a forum. eg. "I saw ....movie on the weekend. It was the best movie ever!!!!" posted in a forum that fits the demographics of the target audience in order to boost sales

My sites are in my sig, and they have my whois info. :thumbsup I totally agree though. Fake nics suck, and I believe they are against the tos. Of course that kind of thing is left uninforced. :Oh crap

Then there's forum founders who create fake nicks on their own forum to give the impression there's more activity happenin' than there actually is. Or to get fake drama going and get lurkers sucked in to participating.
