Whats your favorite sci fi movie of all time?

Any other geeks here? lol
Whats your favorite sci fi movie?

Remember "The Forbidden Planet"? where an ancient race of aliens purged all their negative emotions with this giant computer and now its raging wild against the last human caretaker of the city?

Did you see the movie "Serenity"? I thought it was a fun entertaining movie version of a cool series. Not my all time favorite though.

How about War of the worlds? The original that is.

Or the classic Star Wars first movie?

What else?

Difficult to narrow it down to just one.

Among my faves are 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien & Aliens, Predator, The Thing (Carpenter's remake), The Abyss (although the ending sucked)...and the first two Terminators.

the origional radio broadcast of war of the worlds is hands down the best story ever....anything that causes mass suicides hasta be the winner...one thought i have every day almost.....Imagine if the major news networks pulled this today, with video of people getting wasted by aliens and shit how many people would off themselves...

The supposed mass panic during the original H.G. Wells radio broadcast of War of the Worlds was largely exaggerated and mostly an urban myth. There was no mass exodus of people, rioting or pandemonium as the story goes.

I would have a fairly large list though my tastes are varied.

The Thing (both original and remake)
Event horizon (sci-fi/horror)
Blade Runner
Plan 9 from outer space (classic and must be on list)
Planet of the Apes
Alien (first one)
Robocop (first one)
Star wars (original & empire)
Soylent Green
Akira (animated)
A clockwork orange
The day the earth stood still.
The Road warrior (first one)

Although I disagree with some of your choices we see eye to eye for the most part. You are missing "Dark City"!

Not a movie but I'm really enjoying the new Battlestar Gallactica series.

Spannow : The day the earth stood still is a definate classic! MOre of a pollitical movie than just a sci fi movie.

I think Deep Space 9 was the best written TV Star Trek series mostly because it was episodic. The story was continued from one show to the next.

There hasnt been any great new Sci Fi movies in some years now.

ALIEN was the first serious big budget, scifi horror / thriller where the creature wasn't some clumsy guy in a rubber suit with no expression. This monster was frightening because it was presented seriously. It had a life-cycle, it was fast and killed indescriminently - as it would in nature. Audiences had never been "hunted" like that in space before - ergo it was a huge success and became the yardstick by which all others were measured - and still are. As much for set design and technique as Blade Runner and Star Wars, it set the standard for scifi horror...

I also must toss in Gattica. I had spaced this movie though it does paint a very possible and brutal picture of the future.

Oh trust me I know.. I was a kid like 10 and I bugged my parents into letting me watch Alien.. LoL I couldn't sleep with out being scared to death for months..

Best thing about the movie Alien is it still fits in this day and age as a top movie. Meaning it could still hold it's own today. I wish they would re-release it to the theaters in it's orginal format.

Aliens was also a damn good movie, but after that, they kinda killed the series with the other releases IMO.

The Thing - I AGREE

Event horizon - I DISAGREE - Paul Anderson has yet to make a great film start to finish and although this one started strong, like so many of his previous films, it fizzled out half-way through and ended in a heaping mess.

Blade Runner - I AGREE

Plan 9 from outer space - C'mon man you serious? - I DISAGREE

Planet of the Apes - I DISAGREE - It never lived up to its potential based on the rich ape environment and culture fleshed out in the book. It was made too early, before it could've been done justice via our CGI today - even Tim Burton blew it. This needs Peter Jackson attention!

Alien - I AGREE

Robocop - I AGREE

Star wars - I AGREE

Soylent Green - I DISAGREE - Like Logun's Run (which is currently slated to enter preproduction) it was made too early to do it justice beyond bad 70s designs and cheesiness.

Akira - I AGREE (but animation is in its own genre)

A clockwork - I AGREE

The day the earth stood still - I AGREE

The Road warrior - I DISAGREE - Although I will agree that this film set the standard for envisioning post-apocolyptic chaos I don't feel it was one of the greatest scifi films ever made.

Starship Troopers. Holy shit, it was like Melrose place, only in space, with lots of awsome battle scenes and people being totally oblivious to having a 10x10 inch gash in their arm.

I mean goddam, how many bullets did it take to kill one of those things? I wish I wasn't a retard, I'd make a bunch of animated gifs of the best scenes from the movie

Yes bdjuf, the Matrix is considered scifi, however, it is a shameful ripoff of Dark City. Check out that film, it originally told the same essential story as all 3 Matrix movies - in one film!

I remember that one, definitely a great flick.

Brings to mind another from that same era - think it was called Dreamscape (Dennis Quaid?)
