Video Editing help

I am a newb when it comes to this and it has nothing to do with my business.
This is for personal shit only so i use windows movie maker which has never done me wrong.

I never had problem wiht the first version but when i installed SP2 and got the new version i have issues. When i try trasnfering from my DV camera to the computer via Windows Movie Maker a few minutes into the tape the computer starts stalling the the video and doesnt capture it all.

Someone find a solution or reccommend a diff program i can download so i can upload the video in .mpeg format or osmething and then just trasnfer it over to my collection and start editing it.

Actually, depending on your PC, the FIRST thing that I would recommend is more RAM.

Ok, answer these and I'll recommend a new editing app for you:

1. What is your CPU type, CPU speed, and amount of RAM?

2. Will you be editing HD?

Alex, the issue you are seeing is because at a certain point, the system isn't polling the port fast enough to capture the video. Usually this happens over time as the longer you capture, the more ram gets used up, the less buffer you have to work with, and sooner or later the system is caught having to write out to disk and it doesn't look at the video port for a few frames. It can take a few more frames to resysnc and keep capturing.

This is often the case using built in Firewire ports. Better software will work better to reduce this problem, as they will better manage memory and such.

How fast is your PC?

Alex

Didnt you decide to leave till the skin is gone (looks around*skin is gone lol)
Thank god cause that was the only thing helpful.

Looks like what you said makes the most sense.
So lets say i have a 35 min video. If i edit in 4 min portions and do it 9 times would that change anything?

This P.C is a piece of shit and it is time for an upgrade.

640MB of ram. What if i have no other programs running?

Dude you are straight up wasting your time using a PC like that for video editing and rendering...

Time for a new PC with at least 1GB of RAM.
Processors with Dual Core or at least Hyperthreading make rendering much faster.

Exactly... Personally, I wouldn't touch a task like that with less than 2GB DDR; talk about painfully slow.

Because i already told you. 99% of the shit i do my this computer has nothing to do with video editing.

I am not going to spend more than i did on my video camera to be able to edit once every two years. I would waste more time and money. I upgrade my computer when i cant do essential tasks on it. But it does exceptinally well for what is needed.

Why buy a fucking Ferrari if you are never going to go past 110MPH?

Download the trial version of Adobe Premiere Pro. Will not be all that pretty with low RAM but it should do.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, Video and DV editing is one of the most CPU and RAM intensive things that you can do on a computer and that system doesn't meet the Minimum requirements of many of the editing apps.

I may upgrade this machine. But fuck 2 gigs of Ram. Becasue thats counter-productive.

See the way it works with me is i go to Fry's
Buy more Ram, and then while im at it a New video card.
Then i get home and i say lets test it out, and i reinstall counterstrike again.

Next 72 hours im glued to my seat and only when a relative who thinks i am dead sends police to my house will i stop playing.

Its a horrible cycle which i have faced many times.

Alex, 640MB of ram, well, FORGET IT. You could try to capture it in sections less than your drop out, but I would hate to see what you render time is going to be on your end product (it will likely be measured in DAYS, not hours).

Spew $500 and get a reasonable machine... these are NOT the best video machines, but they will get you closer to "reasonable":

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=19&l=en&s=dhs

Make sure you have an ass load of ram (my editing machine has 4 gigs, and the extra rendering units for after effects all have at least 1 gig).
