i am with 12clicks on this one. france is probably the most proud nation in the world. yet, in WW2, it took the nazis less than 24 hours to take the entire country, and instead of resistance, what the french people oferred was a government of colaboration with the nazis (Vishi).

if it wasn't for the Brits and later the Americans - the proud french people would speak german today...

This man has used fear and hatred as his muscle for over 30 years. And lately the whole country has suffered a barrage of this so-called fear and hatred that has been fueled by the media and brought to light in a very badly run election by the politicians. Le Pen fested on it like a pig in shit and his electorate followed him to the urnes whereas the left wing and right wing were just as divided as ever and this time they shot themselves in the foot.
The turn out of voters was a record low. The French political class has a lot to be blamed for this. Especially the party programs that left the voters indifferent. The overall feeling yesterday was that it was going to be Chirac and Jospin in the second round whatever happened. Well, everyone sort of conveniently forgot Le Pen, thinking that he might do his percentage and then shut his trap for the next few months.
Everyone was wrong and unfortunately, we'll be hearing a lot from him in the next 2 weeks.
Whatever the turnout, I think the most justified thing said was from Dominique Stauss-Kahn:"The political class perhaps deserves what happened to it, but the French people don't deserve Jean-Marie Le Pen".

i agree... but i think it was on yahoo.fr - not yahoo.com, which is why the french government intervened (but i am not sure).

having said that, for all the red-necks and KKKs in the US, do you know how many sinagogues are burnt each year in the US? do you know how many jews are being physically attacked in the US each year over being jews? and do you know how many in france? it is not the numbers of racists, it is what the population is willing to accept. in the US, the authorities and people will not accept that, not because they love jews, but because it makes the society weak. in france, physical attacks on jews and on sinagogues are a daily occurance which is not viewed as a terrible thing, because the victims are jews. this is a sign of a sick society, and le pen showing 20% support is just a symptom.
