Actually I stand somewhat corrected on that. The COC (Canadian Olympic Committee) put a plan into effect pretty much just for the Vancouver games. It seems that in '76 in Montreal we, the host country, did not win a gold medal. Nor did we, the host country, win a gold medal during the winter games in Calgary. They don't want that to happen in Vancouver.

So they put a plan into effect, and that's why they were predicting 25 medals total for Canada in this 2006 games. We likely won't get that many, but we should still be in the top 2 or 3 countries overall for medal counts.

The COC also sunk millions into the Canadian athletes of note, for the latest fitness and diagnostic equipment and coaching and training. So, it's something anyway. It's still nowhere near the massive amounts of cash the USA dumps into their athletic programs and athletes. Look at speedskater Joey Cheek for example, he won a gold medal and mentioned to the media that he would be donating his $25,000 bonus to charity. Do Canadian athletes get a $25,000 bonus for winning gold at the Olympics? I highly doubt it. :D

I may regret admitting this here, but -- YES -- I am a closet hockey fan. I see thread like this, and teensy little pain in my heart goes "pop". I soooo wish I knew more about the game than I do. It can be so hard to even come up near the rink -- you know, just the feel ice on your cheek from some burly goalie or something grinding to a halt. It's a fucking beautiful sport! Just ask MrPheer, and he'll tell ya, I always swing the conversation over to Hockey, no matter what we're supposed to be talking about. He is very patient with me. Thank you, Will. MrPheer was so nice he let me talk him into letting design his hockey blog... BoY! was that a disaster. To say that it turned out *gay* would be an understatement. I'm very much looking forward to the Canada - Sweden game, and this coming week we play Finland, and then the Czechs..... this is going to be a great week of hockey-watching.... for me anyway.

Strange this far, Sweden-Russia 0-5, Switzerland beats the Chechz, Slovakia beats Russia and right now 0-0 between Kazachstan and Russia, but i think when it comes to the quarter we will see who rules. This weeks hockey is ruin my work.
