I'm in to more of the big band sound, so definitely check out the Mingus Big Band, especially their double-disc "Que Viva Mingus." They play every Thursday at the Fez in NYC and I'd definitely check them out if you're in the area.
Can't go wrong with the classics like Davis (Bitches Brew), Monk or Charlie Parker either.Steve J.
