Apparently so...

A UN report is expected to call on the United States to close its Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba without delay and transfer the near-500 supposed "enemy combatants" held there to American soil to guarantee them access to fair trials.

A leaked draft of the document, written over 18 months by five independent experts in international law appointed by the UN Commission on Human Rights, says the inmates at Guantanamo are being denied their rights to mental and physical health to a degree that sometimes amounts to torture.

If not in Guantanamo, it'll be done somewhere else. If not under American control, it will be subcontracted to a country or mercaneries who will. There's workarounds for everything. I'm not saying what they're doing is right, I'm just saying we know about this one. I'd rather know about it than have it shut down and going covert about it.

exactly. a symbolic effort by the same people who didn't mind that osama bin laden was operating terrorist camps all over the middle east before 9/11 and orchestrating terrorist attacks, suddenly have strong opinions about protecting captured taliban fighters and foreign mercinaries and terrorists fighting in or operating from afghanistan.

... and the US is going to care? the idea of "innocent until proven guilty" and treating terrorism as a criminal and legal matter is why they weren't stopped to begin with after the first WTO attack.

Technically it is not illegal as you have found a nice legal loop hole to hold people without access to legal aide, who have not been charged and could be innocent.

If it was on US soil it would be illegal. It breaches the Geneva Convention and multitudes of basic human rights.

The US is coming dangerously close to creating a situation where other countries, even first world countries, will have no reason and no impetus to even attempt to work with the US.

Yes, I'm American, just as much as any of the other people that were born and raised here. But I don't agree with alot of the heavy handed decisions that are being made, especially in conflict with global organizations and assocations that we've long used as our own bully pulpit, such as the UN or the WTO.

Just because we're American doesn't mean we can do everything on our own. There are way more people in China alone than the US, I don't think we're going to like it if they become a first world nation.
