Has most of the world forgotten about senior citizens?

I get the vibe from society that most of us here is North America care little about senior citizens, it is sad to see that these people who taught and raised us are almost left behind and forgotten about.

For instance yesterday my girlfriend and I went out to brunch and this old man who was sitting alone at a table of 8 offered anyone in the waiting room (around 10 people) if they would like to join him. It was sad to see not a single person stood up to join him, so my girlfriend and I did, he was a really nice older fella and i must say i am glad we stood up and sat down with him.

I am def. not looking for medals, it just saddens me that not a single person in the entire place would stand up and join this gentlemen,

why is that?

It'll only get worse too as the baby boomers get there.. in time, they won't be forgotten about, they'll be resented.

yes no doubt, both my parents are a couple years from reaching the 6 mark, kind of worries me.

i mean this old guy was nice enough to offer his seat and the entire room kind of looked at him like he was crazy,

some cultures you never ever eat alone, and there is always a seat open for company, i simply cannot stand the north american culture of keep to yourself.

wow you're supposed to be the newest troll or something?

a key to being a good troll is to not write the most obvious answers to every topic (which you do).

you are lame and will be forgotten about, o wait you have to be remembered to be forgotten about.

How can we forget about senior citizens when we nearly get killed by them daily on the road, because there is nothing in place to have them re-evaluated at a certain age, to see if they are still fit to drive?

Fitting the general notion of this thread, it's one reason why I don't mind if I die before I get old. I don't want to be like that guy you sat with.

i am not talking about driving, at the age of 65 you should have to re take your license, and if you're chinese you should be given a bus pass.

Hahaha.. I'm beginning to see why metaman just posts hateful stuff for fun around here...

he finally makes a thread about compassion and respecting the elderly and all he gets are responses about how they're bad drivers.

What's the use?

That's a nice gesture on your part and yes, sadly gestures like that seem to be few and far between.

I love going down to our ANAF here and just shooting the shit with the veterans over a couple of beers. I can't ever repay them for what they risked for our country, but you can see the appreciation THEY have when people acknowledge it, just by spending a couple of hours a week talking to them and buying them a few beers.

However, many of them look at us and DEMAND respect because they're elderly. I've never bought into the argument "Respect your elders." I respect everyone and everyone can lose my respect just as easily. Elderly or not.

There is nothing wrong with being old,

the man was really nice and it was indeed refreshing to meet someone new and different.

he was an author who writes about how its never to late to start being happy and enjoying life, it was a real interesting sit down, and believe me i am not the do gooder type.

sometimes its crazy how much you can learn from older people. i might even go golfing with the old chap in the summer, he took down my email and gave us a business card.

i agree with your final statements, i myself do not know any kind of elderly like that, but i do not give those types of people the time of day anyway.

it was him actually doing the nice gesture, it was sad seeing no one taking him up on it, my girlfriend and i looked at eachother and just said "why not?". i am for sure not the do gooder type who is out there to rescue everyone either. just a nice meal with an elderly gentleman.

Every day my wife has lunch with her 81 yr old grandmother. She even takes her shopping once a week. It's seems the rest of her family is to busy to spend any time with her. They don't realize how fast it all goes.

Yeah, I make it a point to visit my great great aunt Edna as much as possible. She's going to be 82 this year. The thing is, I have a 6 month old now, which is her (get this) great great great nephew.

He means the world to her. Infact, she gets to see my son way more often than she sees her own kids, grand kids and so on.

On Sunday we took her and my boy into the studio and got some portraits done... so that she can have some pictures of them together on her wall.

It's a little thing, but to her... it means everything.

I always offer my sit on the bus or on the train to the elderly more than a hot chic. There are more than enough guys out there already who are willing to give their seat to a young lady, but I doubt if anyone will be kind enough to offer it to an elderly

The older one gets, the more it becomes the other way around.

One of the joys of getting old is you can tend to forget a lot of things about the world.

Still... most driving accidents are caused by young, inexperienced drivers.

Well, our country is known for a culture of close family ties and filial piety. However, you can still find older people who find themselves looking for the care of their loved ones yet aint enjoying any.

We also have several institutions catering the needs of these older citizens including shelter, food, and recreation although there are still some who failed to enjoy such assistance.
